Hi, I have my my old boy back at home with me, he is fit and well and in great condition, although is stiff in his hocks. I am thinking of feeding him chop and TopSpec Veteran balancer as my other horse does really well on the TopSpec joint balancer. I also give them Protexin for gut health. Are there any other supplements that people recommend for older horses? I’m thinking more for ongoing health and issue prevention than addressing any specific issue.

Many thanks

I've actually stripped all supplements for our oldies, they now get a token feed with equibites in that give them their vitamins and minerals and some extra salt and they are doing far better than ever. I also use devils claw liquid (either devils claw or no bite) for my wee arthritic chap and it helps him hugely when he's stiff.

I feed my 23yr old Heygates Balancer or micronised linseed, Thunderbrooks chaff, Turmeric, brewers yeast and Buteless.

He won an in-hand veteran class at the weekend. Judge said he was stunning for his age but not to let him get any fatter - which is difficult as he is a very good doer!

I did put him on Equivite vits and mins for a few days instead of Balancer but he was a nightmare to ride!

Thanks for you help everyone, not heard of Heygates so will look at that and also the Equibites. I have used Formula 4 feet in the past and actually I think my other boy would benefit from that - at the moment he is on Equimins hoof mender as he has soft soles too - so difficult to know what works and what doesn’t!

Thanks again, for taking the time to comment - much appreciated

both of ours get boswellia for its anti inflamm properties, a general balancer (equimins adv. complete), micronised linseed and one is liver compromised so he gets milk thistle too.
I won some equibites at christmas but wasn't that keen on the ingredients.

Heygates is just a cheap balancer nothing special.

I actually just changed his supplements and am trying Global herbs Move Free Plus to see if it does anything and stopping the Buteless. At £50 plus a pot I’m hoping it might!

He was perkier riding yesterday but that could have been a coincidence.

I've been using Top Spec Senior Lite balancer with a handful of their fibre mash for about 9 months now for my 25 year old dales in light work, she looks brilliant at the moment. I don't use any additional supplements as Topspec tell me the balancer has everything she should need in the correct quantities and I don't have any complaints so far. They'll be other similar feeds out there but I like this one and I like the nutrition helpline too.

Thanks! Yes I am feeding him pretty much the same, a handful of chop and the senior balancer. I know he shouldn’t need the protexin but does really well on that. It’s only been a couple of weeks but he’s looking very fit and well at the moment. Hopefully a good summer on this regimen will send him into the autumn in a good place
