Hi all some opinions please, my mare has recently been lame/stiff, this has become more apparent since i took her front shoes off. I had the vet out who said it was a combination of just having her shoes off and arthritus in her front legs and neck.
He suggested "no bute" which she has been on since 31st october with no improvement. She is 17hh.warmblood around 20 years old, shes not ridden, shes is out for 12 hours a day in overnight, any suggestions

I'm not sure what's in "no bute" and I'm not sure whether this is complete rubbish, but I read somewhere that you shouldn't give a mare devil's claw so I always avoided this for my mare. I found codlivine really good for a long time then as my mare got stiffer I used cortaflex.

Try Nafs Devils relief, that really helped my mare when she was first stiff with arthritis, she was on it for a couple of years until she took a down turn and needed something stronger.
Really worked wonders at first.

My little horse had lameness problems from late teens. I found use of chondroiton sulphate and glucosamine tablets daily together with expensive magnetic boots made big difference. Follow instructions on boots carefully( you can get rugs too now). He was out as long as possible during day and actually able to be ridden after I had stopped because of stiffness he did so well. I had a small boy ride him gently and he even managed 50cm cross poles without probs. Lived till age of 31.

I agree with the glucosaime and chondroiton sulphate its very good (I take it myself and it works for me). Also for pain releif you can try Meadowsweet herb, Boswellia Serrata or white willow bark.

I would second feeding linseed. However, even though the linseed meal is meant to be more easily absorbed, it doesn't seem to help my boy; only the linseed oil does!

I have been using premier flex for my 18 yr old gelding, he has been diagnosed with arthritis and this seems to be working really well.

I use Seraquin on my 19 year old mare and it's really improved her way of going and general 'creakiness'. She was diagnosed with arthritis in off fore knee joint 4 months ago. Tub says not to use for more than a month, however vet said to keep her on it at small dose (1/2 scoop a day). Also give her scoop of NAF Superflex in morning feed. Ex racehorse only has NAF and that keeps him 'oiled' too.
