(Sorry if this is in the wrong thread this is my first post)

I have just recently taken on a pair of Shetland ponies. One of them is nearing 20 and has previously suffered quite badly with laminitis. She is much better now and canters round her field but is still limping quite badly on concrete. She can also be quite stiff (vet has said most likely getting old/arthritis) sometimes when hoof picking she can be reluctant to pick up and bend.

I have bought her a protective boot to wear on the concrete to help her but just wondered if any of you would reccomend any supplements for her for the prevention/help with risk of laminitis and also to help her with the stiffness. Or if you don’t think they are worth it?

She is keeping her weight balanced, regular farrier and is on restricted grazing and has a stable if things get too bad.

Thanks :-)

I feed Topspec Antilam to my elderly, laminitic Shetland cross Dartmoor. It has improved his feet considerably. I also use hoof boots, Easyboot Clouds if he is sore after a trim or Equine Fusion for pottering about with the grandchildren.

Thank you, that's helpful to know I will look into that

Test for cushings and if it is positive, pergolide is the treatment. My welsh A had regular laminitis attacks and we were ultra careful about weight. Since being on the treatment the only attack we had was when she was taking her meds. ( it tastes horrible) we now deliver directly into her mouth,in custard via a syringe. She celebrated her 38th birthday in May. Joint wise keep the weight off. Cider vinegar can help or use a recommended joint supplement

Thank you, I will call the vet this week to get her checked over. That's great news, hopefully can get this one feeling a bit better!

I'd definitely start with that :)
If she has fat pads then magnesium supplementation can help.
IME foot soreness can often look like stiffness and muddy the water a bit, from an arthritis point of view I've had success with boswellia when mild.

what boots have you got for her? There are boots that are better than others for lami support/protection/comfort (like easyboot clouds) though they might be size dependent.

Thank you that’s really helpful. She’s got one of the woof wear medical boots to start off with as she’s never had one before so they suggested to try out something small to see if she’s okay with it all and then will get her an easyboot :)

I will get the vet to give her a proper check over as I don’t think she has had that in quite a few years, so could do with a good MOT! She already has the dentist booked in so she will get the full works. It’s interesting to see what other people use too as that’s helpful for me to know moving forward

Mine are currently on Boswellia for stiffness. I really liked Yumove and It worked well, but with four on it it was quite expensive. Boswellia is much cheaper and seems to be working although still early days.
