I have 20 year old haflinger mare and she is in good health generally. Lives out, barefoot, and a good doer. She’s always maintained condition on grass and hay only but recently her coat isn’t looking as shiny as it did and she’s started to look, well, older!

Can anyone recommend a supplement/balancer that has worked well for a pony in their twilight years? I haven’t phoned any feed companies for advice yet but will be doing that this week.

Before you call feed companies, who will have a vested interest in selling you as many magic powders as they can, consider calling your vet for a chat.

We have a bunch of oldies ranging from 20-34.

Like humans good nutrition and quality exercise appropriate to age will go a long way to keeping your horse in excellent health. Annual Cushing tests, bloodwork and once over for challenges such as heart murmurs, joint degradation, bone demineralisation, give you a realistic picture of where things are at.

From these diagnostic reports you can make an educated decision on what supplements if any are required.

I’ve always got great value from an equine nutritionalist as well. Each horse is fed what they need. It’s kept the feed bills down.
