One of my horses has PSD (3 months post op). Scan says healing well, but I wondered if anyone found anything to help/assist the healing of ligaments?

He is currently on Cosequin and Superflex so I think we are covered for MSM.

Thanks

If giving joint supplement and Msm, I would ensure are giving

10gms MSM 99.% purity
4gms chondroitin sulphate 95% purity
10 gms glucosamine HCl 99% purity

Per 500kg horse as a minimum doesn't matter brand or the RDA of the brand,

I would also consider a good balancer of choice

I like pro hoof or meta balance

If cost not an issue once horse in some work I have seem good results with equitop myoplast which provides all the essentially amino acids for muscle development.

Thanks WH - he has all of those at that level already (as standard).

I will take a look at the myoplast, he already takes a supplement for muslce development though, am more interested in something that might help with the repair of the ligament.

I used magnets on my boy, not sure if they helped, but a year down the line and hopefully he's fixed. I also bought some RRA spray (rustox, ruta grav and arnica) to spray on his gums, which he learned to like with the aid of a few treats! It is supposed to help with healing, and wasn't expensive so I gave it a go - gave anything a go lol. bought off these people - very helpful on the phone :)

To be honest unless you go down the magnet or electro pulse route the best thing I have found for ligaments is time and as much slow movement i.e walk as possible

Thanks Tinselface, good idea. I normally give him RRA (in tablet form) before and after chiro, but he hasnt been touched in 3 months so maybe will start the regime again. We dont want to fuss about too much with him (he also had 3 vertebrae removed) so chiro isnt booked for another 6 weeks yet but no harm in giving RRA now.

I use magnets on my arthritic one so have a couple of spare bands around - will see if they make a difference in the stable. He wears the bioflow magnetic boots for schooling normally so will put them on for his walks in hand (or rather hissy fits in hand).

Yes we are attempting walking (he can only manage about 2 steps before he explodes). He is slightly better in the school.

The vet has said that I need to start trotting though? which he normally can do, its just every now and then he explodes and runs off in canter and looks so bl00dy lame

Is he box rested I'm guessing? I had a magnet rug on for the night times just to help with non-movement, I also had a chiro and an osteo every 3 months as I'm sure you're aware but things like this end up causing sacro problems if they're not monitored properly. :)

Yes, he is being boxrested - he could go out into a small pen but it would just send him mental so not worth the risk. Plus it is muddy and icy and generally pants so I am terrified of him falling over.

He has a magnetic rug - I just havent used it as we were trying to leave him pretty much alone because of the KS op. That needs another 3 months for the swelling to go down ideally. We have just had permission to get his chiro out - must book that.

He also has a cyclossage rug so I might try putting that on. He is still a bit sensitive over his back where there is residual swelling but generally he is quite happy letting you touch/groom him.

Vet has said we need to start building him back up and see what he is like in 6 wks time so we are doing controlled exercise now. No saddle for another 3 months.
