We've had loads of supplements reccomended (admittedly, often by staff at the tack shops!

) for various things, but then again, lots of people say to steer clear as they're a waste of money!

We've been told that seaweed does magical things to appearence and that garlic discourages flies!

Oh, and that cod liver makes a horse look years younger, and does wonders for the coat. I've actually seen evidence for this, but is it right to feed a vegetarian animal a fish product? The vet said that normal vegetable oil gives nearly as good results as codliver, and costs a ton less.

I bought a little thing of spearmint for Jayjay, because I'm fussy about his chronic garlic breath, but apparently that improves condition too?

So what are your experiences here

Have any wonder-supplements? Anything to steer well clear of? They generally seem over-priced, and you can get pretty much the same thing for half the price for human consumption, but is this safe?

Hahah, I'm at home alone and bored xD Didn't get to go up the stables this afternoon as I had an orthodontics appointment!

Spent all morning down there, but I usually wear gloves to do stuff, and now my arms are really tanned but I have white hands!

Well I always feed garlic as my girlie suffers with sweetitch and i find it really helps with the flies and is good for them too.
As far as oil goes I have been giving her veg oil for about 4 months now and she has such a wicked shine it's amazing, and as you said it's a fraction of the price.

I would recommend oil - i used cod liver if it was ever on offer, but usually just used veg oil, and always garlic, although only use the recommended ammount as it can make horses dangerously anaemic if you use too much.

have a look at simple sytems feed on the web, they have a complete feed with seaweed, linseed brewers yeast lucerene and pulp that is excellent

i think supliments are a waste of time
i add garlic....it seeps out of their pores and its in their wee...repels flies and is good for the heart and resperitory system when their stabled
and cod liver oil yes i love it but its £10 for two litres, when veg oiil is £3 for two litres
i fed cod liver for 6 years and have recently switched as i think maybe it was a bit much!! i dont take it so im sure my horse can go without

The only general supplement I rate is Selenavite E. I feed it to all of mine and people comment on the difference in 3 days.
A specialist product I really rate is called Equicell, I have my pointers on it and they have never looked or raced better.
Apart from that:
Electrolytes - waste of time, salt is just as well if the rest of the diest is sufficient.
Joint supplements - The cheap ones are cheap for a reason. When paying out, you are paying for the research and testing that has gone into them.
'Wind' supplements - Waste of time. Scope it, find out what is wrong with it and sort it out in days, not months. Thing that makes me laugh is the people that turn to these are the ones that make their horses eat from a haynet, and not let all the muck drain out naturally.

My horse had two doses of so kalm yesterday and was really tense so think my £12.99 was a waste of money.Last time out he was 2nd after dressage this time think he was probably 2nd to last
