Our local horse supplier makes his own stable mix/cubes (he said they are not much different to D&H Build up which i was going to buy originally) It costs £6.20 for a bag.

Is this about right for a non-brand name feed?

a client of mine bought an own brand of pasture mix. when I had a look at it is was 50/50 pony nuts and barley!! NOT pasture mix! Have them open up a bag and have a look at it... Obviously if you want cubes, that will be harder...

Check the Protein/fibre ash etc %. Most cheaper mixes are more "oatfeed" - husk-type stuff and not quality ingredients.
If the Protein levels are comparable then go for it.
Personally as my horse thrives on Rowan Barbary Forage N Fibre in Winter and Topspec AntiLam in Summer, I stick to them - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Mind you - I'm not a feed expert - best ask MaresAbound, she's the expert!
