Hiya, just a general question, but was actually interested if anyone makes up their own rather than purchasing an already made up mix?

I personally mix up my own to feed my mare as Id rather know about whats going in her food, rather than buying it premade, which tends to be more expensive also.. as I also prefer to make my own feeds rather than buying mixes.
I currently give Brewers yeast.. Biotin... and a dollop of pig oil,
Ill soon be adding seaweed and linseed to this mix as ive been reading up on some benefits that this may have for my mare...( please note I have only just found out that brewers yeast has biotin already in it..whoops :o..so shall be cutting the extra biotin out)
Ive tailored this mix for her as she is barefoot, I brought her with awful feet but this is slowly rectifying with my mix, she had a thin mane and tail, and her coat was a bit dull, I must say she now is looking pretty good to me :)

But what do you give your horses and why? also what sort of dosage you use would also be helpfull :D

A big slice of chocolate cake if youve read this far! hehe! ;)

My horse has garlic, as it helps the immune system by increasing the blood flow and because it smells yummy!!!
Seaweed - given to her as a vit and min supplement.
Milk thistle - she has a weak liver and it helps to support it.
Nettles - she has nettle tea 2 - 3 times a week for same reasons above and its a good detox.
Naf Superflex - Have always fed a joint supplement and this works really well for her.

I use Feedmark Benevit on all mine. They are all healthy and look it. It is a broad spectrum mix of vitamins and minerals. It can be hard to mix up your own tho as some vits need others to be absorbed properly, this can get very confusing. I also use their Hedge herbs, but am harvesting and drying my own blend of similar herbs. The benivit works out very cheaply the hedge herbs are abit expensive, hence making my own blend.

My guys have garlic granules - if I am feeding them they will have garlic, but I won't feed specially to give them garlic (if you know what I mean!!). I have always been told that garlic has blood cleansing properties, but I mostly like it for keeping airways clear, and if it helps to keeps the flies away in the summer then great :)

My 4yo has a global herbs calmer - this is the first time I have ever fed anything like this, but I have to say it really has made a difference to him. He is quite a nervy little soul, and it has chilled him right out.

The pony is a bit prone to having a cough now and then, so I usually keep a bottle of global herbs airway liquid in the tack room. I will also use propel for the pony, as she tends to get a bit run down when the seasons are changing, and it seems to perk her up and keep her looking nice and shiny and healthy :)

Oooh what herbs are you harvesting yourself? this sort of thing really interests me.. do you grow and harvest? or just go out into the country to harvest wild herbs?

its very true about the vitamins that need to work with other things, but im not using anything that needs anything for the body to absorb it, I tend to research stuff to death before using it lol

I meant to put garlic in my original post, I use this too for its blood cleansing properties, mixed with the brewers yeast I find I have no problems with flies what so ever too! its good stuff - I think I may have to start eating it lol!

Do you use mag calmer from global herbs? Ive been told its just magnesium oxide which can be brought as it is for a lot lot cheaper ;) ... If im wrong on that score someone please let me know! I may be trying it as my 4yr old keeps seeing imaginary ghosts in hedges! lol

I'm using the Supercalm on my boy - TBH I don't know rightly what is in it - just that its helped!

My boy is a 4yo arab, and just calling him nervy is quite an understatement. Just being brushed and rugged is quite a drama in itself, although now he has started to be ridden he is much better, and the actual riding itself he isn't worried by at all!

He's a bit of a skinny pointy arab, but since he's been on the supercalm its as though he isn't wasting the food we are stuffing into him and burning it off with nervous energy, and he has put a nice bit of condition on since he has been on it.

He's still just as cheeky as ever and has his moments, but I definitely think it has helped him anyway :)

only add garlic as I use topspec comprehensive balancer so I don't need to add anything else. What some people spend on supplements is stupid

mine just have 4 tablets of pernamax equine, which just helps sooth stiff or sore joints and maintains healthy joint mobility..
i also feed biotin cause my 5 year old has no shoes, and my horses feet dont grow much !!
lol

I use pink powder .... it has chilled my stressy horse out, his wart (may have been a sarcoid) has gone ... and he has put on weight, I don't know if it was the pink powder or something else but it was the only thing that changed in the two years of me having him ... except me pampering him :D

Soya oil, equielements joint supplement, rose hip shells (will have my arm off for them) seaweed, electrolytes, cleavers, hawthorn berries. Used to have nettles, ulcer supp, chamomile, mellow (her happy pills :p) st johns wort and cleavers on top of that (she had a lot of things to fix :s)

I've recently put my pony on MollyChaff calmer which is an all round feed that has magnesium, camomile, lemon balm, mint and a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement in it.

I also add a big scoop of winter glow, summer shine - which is £12 for a huge bag and includes linseed, garlic, spearmint, seaweed and fenugreek.
