Interesting post.
I think you are right when you say horses shouldn't need supplements as they should get all they need from good quality grazing. However I think the problem is that many many horses these days do not have access to good quality grazing and have to spend all year on tired overgrazed land. In which case supplementation has a role to play in keeping the horse healthy.

For the record ours have:
garlic - for flies and as a natural antibiotic.
BOSS - for the mares feet (much improved since using it)
mint - always have some in for feeding wormers bute etc.
Veg Oil - give my heavy mare a dolup just to help her joints.

They also both have access to one of the large himilayan salt licks.

These are what I feed, not all to one horse though - I have 4 horses:

Soya Oil - Because it improves my sweet itch horses coat condition which is always very dull and dandruffy this time of year otherwise. Also recommended to feed it to my old pony who has athritis as believe it helps with her mobility.

NAF Superflex - I bought this initially for my eventer, mainly just as a maintenence thing to keep his joints healthy but it turned out to solve his cold back!! Dont ask how but it disappeared so Im scared to ever take him off it, plus he's definately looser! Also feed it to my 2 veterans, which also has definately made them more mobile.

Vit & Min Supplement - Its a local made one for horses, has the usual wide range of vits & mins (including B vits). Obviously feed it to try and insure none of my horses are lacking in anything as none of mine are on the full recommended feed quantities.

Brewers Yeast - Ive been told to try this for my sweet itch horse, to try and keep the bugs away apparently. I get it really cheap so worth a shot!

Dried Mint - To tempt my fussy horse to eat, seems to work!

Electrolytes - Well, I think most people have these. I feed it before, during and after competitions or hot days.

Mine are all out 24/7 but Im very careful about their grazing and 2 of mine have had laminitis in the past (1 recovering now, possibly cushings though), so obviously they are limited. So I dont believe mine do get all their nutrients from the grass.

I didn't used to use supplements at all, but I am just now

.

He currently gets:
Newmarket Joint Supplement - for arthritis - still on first tub, but seems to be working
Equivite - for vit/mins but changing to a lick once he's finished this tub
Marmite - for midges, not entirely sure its making a difference so stopping it soon
MagOx - trying it to see if it helps him, waiting to get vet out for EMS and cushings test, so will stop it after that.

He gets this in a handful of hi-fi lite and a big handful of speedibeet.

The only supplement I have to use is one for his joints, its either that or Danilon. The rest I'm not 100% sure about and will probably stop.
