Had a lovely morning with my littley but god is having a hairy a nightmare in the winter!

Thought I'd start a "support group" thread, to share tips/advice etc - or just to feel each others pain!!

Used 7 day mud away on her today, its basically expensive grease! So may just use pig oil (but was too scared!). But did help with the bits of mud I couldnt get off easily.

Also discovered that getting her to rest her leg on my knee gives me two hands free to go through her feathers with a brush! So will continue that (very BHS, I know...!).

Haven't groomed her in about 3 weeks and her mane was still lovely and v easy to brush out, I use that stuff in the tall silver bottle....god cant think of the name! Its for manes/tails and bodies. Will come to me!

Anyway, any other tips? Will try and add some photos later.

Hannah (and Puzzle!) xxx

Here's my tip...

Clip out and hog.

Sorted !

I too have a hairy bear!
I use Canter coat shine/Mark Todd Competition Gloss/Absorbine and pig oil and sulphur by the bucket load!
I think its just a case of trying to keep on top of the knots, tangles and mud - which isnt easy when mine are out 24/7!
Is it 'DreamCoat' that you used for Puzzle? x

heres what i do and its worked for over 33 years ....... not a lot !

i never hose legs, let them dry on there own , brush them out the next morning .

i use canter mane and tail spray 2 or 3 times per week , on mane and tail .

it works for me !

i dont have any winter pics that show how hairy she gets, but im sure you can imagine .

Can I join please? I have a very hairy boy!
I swear by 7 Day Mud Away, it's a God-send in winter. I have some pig-oil too for the first time this year which I will give a go when it gets wetter.

Ditto Christi......

Keep the tail in plaits - 5 plaits does us because she has a mega thick tail. Stops tangles/dreadlocks, and keeps the bulk of the tail relatively clean, especially with a mare.
I find Eqyuus Survivor Detangler excellent for sorting out manes and tails. A little goes a very long way.
Don't do a lot with the legs. If muddy, leave to dry. Keep up to date applying oil and sulpher. Don't worry about mud fever, because if you part the hair next to the skin, it will be clean and white-no matter how filthy the rest of the feather is.

Janette , ive never plaited her tail or mane as it they never seem to tangle , maybe thats due to to the vast quantities of mane and tail spray i get through lol ! :-) wanders off to raid piggy bank to buy more ! lol hairy horses eh !

I bought a tail bag near the end of last winter, for some reason my cob manages to poo all down his tail in the winter and it gets stained.
The tail bag kept it clean and also tangle free which is handy as it usually takes me a while to fully brush his tail as its so thick.

God I hadn't even thought about keeping her unstained, just keeping her not like a mud monster!

Let me know how the pig oil goes as although that mud away stuff seems good its v expensive for what is basically just grease...? Unless anyone knows something I dont! Whats the sulphur good for?

Her mane was remarkably (apart from one huge plait) really easy to brush through today - the plait was a bugger though - really intricate and a huge clump of mud on the end! Maybe she's going to be stolen ;)

I curse white feathers every day....!

Oh and yes, it is dreamcoat!

Good Grief ! can you not just let it drop ? or it a mission now ?

Shy is pig oil and sulphured up, and has his brand new "gentleman's rainjacket" on tonight, cos it's p***** down, freezing, and he was caked in mud and gunk this morning. His legs looked like he had wellies on over his knees (he'd skidded and gone down on them), but the mud had slid off by this evening.

I love how your dog and your horse match! She is truly beautiful.

I've given up hosing legs, too. Too much hassle. I'm going to start oiling legs soon to make it easier. I too swear by Canter mane and tail-excellent stuff.

Someone said clip and hog: I have to agree if your horse doesn't need sedating for the legs!
