That is horrendous!!! It has to be a wind up, but I fear not... how can this be allowed to happen. This world shocks me every day!!

There is a post below tha has actually bothered to read the home office documents!
"Article 11: Stray and Feral Animals of Domestic Species
The Directive prohibits the use of stray and feral animals of domestic species except where
(a) there is an essential need for studies concerning the health and welfare of the animals or
serious threats to the environment or to human or animal health, and (b) there is a scientific
justification that the purpose of the procedure can be achieved only by the use of a stray or a
feral animal. These provisions are consistent with current UK legislation, policy and practice."
So basically they could be involved in animal welfare/health studies - i.e. a stray pony with laminitis could be involved in laminitis research, and the second one meaning that there is no other option - most scientists would not think using a bunch of stray animals of unknown age, breeding and health history would be very scientific! Lab animals are bred in controlled conditions.
