I have just got a house with a couple of stables and a 6ft apron of concrete in front of the stables. As it's rather muddy I would like to expand it but have been told that concrete is expensive. I have seen pics of hoggin and gravel for yards but don't know what that entails. Has anyone got any suggestions?? Many thanks

I would spend out and have concrete or bricks etc. I have hard core down whilst I decide what to do with mine and I think anything other than a solid surface is a cleaning nightmare and also the weeds come through with a vengence.

We have a gravel/stoney yard, not ideal unless your horses are shod or have sensative soles etc but it does tend to make they walk sensibly if there feeling fresh!....also it doesn get slippy with the ice or snow, so it has its benefits in winter, but you can't sweep it, funnily enough it doesn ever need sweepign though, we have concete just outside the stables though.

Thanks. We live in Jersey at the mo and are relocating to Scotland. I know you're in England but roughly how much does concrete cost. It's hugely pricey here. Thanks

I put down hardcore, then 10mm to dust to form a blinding layer and then woodchip - sounds like a hassle but it's actually very quick to do, doesn't freeze, you don't get stones caught in hooves all the time and it keeps the mud and weeds off.

concrete good and lasts but slippy if icy (dishwasher salt/or sand is best on ice as doesnt affect concrete)tarmac is a no no. hardcore with fine finish or gravel does the job but difficult to keep looking nice.
