I have a 15x17m lunge/turnout pen which desperately needs a top up. I'd estimate around 20 tonnes to get it ship shape again. Toying with the idea of sand mixed with carpet fibre - does anyone have any recommendations for sourcing and installation? It's currently sand mixed with rubber which I don't love.

It would be good to get some ideas of potential companies to purchase the surface from, and if anyone has a ball park of roughly what this might cost that would be useful for future planning too! :)

For surface a good chunk of the cost is delivery so most economical is that which is local to you.

Carpet fiber is great if from someone reputable - I've seen lots of disasters on here where it's got crap in it ! I was sent a sample from a new start up company I was considering - their sample had a piece of glass in it !!

Sand is not all the same so worth researching that. Sand granules which are round don't even firm up and stay unstable (IMHO - think about balls in a ball bit) so you need granules which are effectively brick shapes so they can form a stable base to make a firm structure that they don't sink into (think about a stone wall shape).

Echo look who is close to you as transport is the biggest variable cost … we are lucky I am less than 5 miles from the sand quarry but me suggesting who we used wouldn’t help you if you live in devon

Also consider if you can get an artic on site as if not costs will go up again if have to ship in smaller quantities

sub angular silica sand. round as somebody has already said will roll around. angular will compact too much.
we went with slightly coarser rather than the finest as in a windy location. Very worthwhile getting sample and looking at under a cheap usb microscope. Sounds OTT I know but saves an expensive error once it's delivered and tipped! This article expalins well: https://premierequestrian.com/three-things-to-understand-about-sand/

And for the 'filler' we used combi-ride. Had samples of many others - most went straight in the bin!

good luck
