i am thinking about puting up a small turn out area that i can use in the frost and snow for my laminitic so he can get out and move about but not get the grass, what would be the best type of surface to put down and also the min area it could be
i have an area in the garden that i could use for it its a flat bit right in front of the house so i could keep an eye on what was happening! i was thinking on wood chip surface but not sure if sand would be better but worried about him eating it!

I had woodchip put down in an area of our garden that we hardly ventured into and it has been a godsend. We already had gravel over a membrane down so we just put basalt on top of this to give a solid base, this also helps any water drain away, and put a thick layer of woodchip on top. I wouldn't be without it now :)

the bit i have in mind has chuckies over weed control stuff (but weeds are still growing!) there is a pond there which i would fill in or i would have swimming horses!

it takes away another bit of the garden (less weeding!)

thanks for the info now to talk hubby round to the idea - i have all summer to do that

We have a 20 x 15 which we did all ourselves. We used reject builders sand @ £20/tonne and long rubber strips from Alruba @ £130/tonne.

Pea gravel is probably the best thing for sore hooves... if you can get it a good few inches deep, it conforms to the hoof like a bean bag (and they like lying on it too, very comfy).

When I first mentioned the idea to my OH it was "no way" but somehow I managed to convince him it was his idea and now he thinks it's the best thing we've ever done :D

I'd recommend having it done as soon as you can to let it settle before you put horses on it.
