Surgery for locking stifle

I have a 4 year old gelding who suffers from a sticky stifle. It can take 2 hours before he can put his foot to the ground sometimes. He stands with his hind leg stuck straight out behind him.

We stopped stabling him over night, & since then, he has only hade one episode of it. I am hoping that he grows out of it.
