Survey for those of you that hack :)

Should the geldings with the problem be excluded from the herd rather than my filly?

A little survey for those of you hack hack out on the roads or public bridleways (because I'm bored).

I always wear reflectives even if I'm just going on the bridleway and not on the roads.
I don't carry a mobile phone whilst riding as the only time I did I fell off.
I don't take the dog out hacking with me unless someone is walking it.
I will always try to hold on to my horses reins if I fall off.
These days I always leave at least one horses length in between me and the horse in front and expect others to do the same or I ride two abreast.

I..........

*Never wear reflectives (runs and hides under a table)

5. Depends.

1) Only when visability is poor
2) Yes and I would be happy to answer/make important calls whilst riding
3) Yes, but not if I plan to go on any roads
4) t depends on the situation
5) It depends on who I'm riding with

Don't carry a mobile (no reception round here)

Don't have a dog
Depends on the situation - always try and hold onto reins when I have fallen but sometimes you just can't if you fall funny.
Ride 2 abreast as pony is young, but when we move into single file and have space between the neds when we do

1) Only wear reflectives when visability is poor

*Never wear reflectives (also runs and hides under a table)
*Do carry a phone and would call and text
*Dont take my dog hacking
*Keep hold of the reins on the couple of times its happened....horse just stands and looks at me anyway
*Depends who im riding with

I always wear reflectives when riding on the roads.

I always carry a mobile. If it's safe to do so I will answer it.

I don't take my dog as she needs to be on a lead most of the time.

If I fall off it depends on the situation. The one time I did fall off on a hack I kept hold of the reins.

1. Always
2. Carry one on silent, don't check or use it whilst on horse - for emergencies only.
3. Don't have a dog.
4. Don't know yet but current pony does tend to buck and I have taken to chanting "keep hold of the reins" to myself when he does as there's a couple of not so great roads near where we hack, to be fair he'd probably get knackered / side tracked by grass before he got anywhere near them!
5. Depends on who I'm riding with, usually ride 2 abreast but when single file try and leave a gap which either is huge as ponio is slow or non existant as we use the very calm horse we go out with as an unintentional buffer as ponio is scared!

Nearly always in reflectives, whether on road or moor.
Depending on the horse I leave phone to ring, or I make texts etc

Don't take Dog
Try and hold onto reins
Depends on the horse

1. Wear reflectives if I'm going anywhere near a road.
2. Keep mobile on, because not usually expecting calls when riding.
3. Don't have dog.
4. Would try to hold onto reins, but circumstances might prevent it.
5. Depends. A full horse length seems a bit much in most circumstances. Wouldn't go up another horse's bum though, either!

1. Always wear hi-viz
2. Carry mobile on silent and wouldn't use it when riding
3. Don't have dog, wouldn't take one hacking and wouldn't want to hack with someone who brings a dog either.
4. Don't know - never fallen off out hacking *touches wood*
5. My horse has to be at the front, but I always ask the rider behind to stay very close to her. She doesn't kick but does get excited by the sound of hoof beats coming up behind her, if one of the others gets left behind and trots to catch up for instance so try to minimise this. She seems to feel safer with another horse's nose resting on her bum.

1) Always wear hi-viz
2) Yes, and I will answer calls and text, but not on busy roads.
3) Don't take dogs with me
4) *Touch wood* never fallen off out hacking, but I would hold on at all costs - I would hope that Murph would stay and eat grass with me anyway, but my mare would be off home like lightning.
5) It depends on who I'm riding with - I'm normally in front, but I try to make sure people behind me leave a bit of a gap, unless the other horse is my mare, in which case she is normally jogging up Murphy's bum!

Always wear flourescents, even when hacking entirely off-road as I hack round woods. TBH I can't believe anyone would admit to never wearing anything flourescent when hacking on the roads...
frown.gif

Answer my phone and texts only on my horses - never on someone else's, but my phone is always with me and on vibrate.
Dog is a bit disobedient at the moment so is left at home!
If I fall off I hold on to the reins unless I am in danger of being kicked/trodden on.
When riding single file I keep a horse's distance apart unless needed (I hack out at work with youngsters, on our "nanny" horse, so we have many different situations to deal with).
