Survey request - horse owner decisions

I have completed it and thought it was a good survey in that it gave specific scenarios to consider, rather than asking for personal experience (although it did that too). This really helps in establishing how different people would react in a given situation and takes out all the nuance of real life situations, that complicate the answers/decisions. Would be very interested in the results when you have analysed them, if you are able to share.
Yes, was rather expecting to be asked for more detail on personal experience. But you're right that it's how we would all like to react to the same scenario that is the useful info. Every circumstance is different.

Interesting study! Very well put together questionnaire too.

Done.
My paddock sound pony was bought as a companion. Ended up able to be ridden only to end up with issues at 10 and become companion again.

Euthanasia was considered at one point as she struggled to lift a hind foot - she could but if she thought about it too much she couldn't. It took months of reassuring her she could have her foot back for balance if needed. - this occurred after she had a new farrier once (he was patient and gentle with her but she suddenly couldn't give him that foot and the more we tried the more she panicked so we called it a day). I trimmed it the best I could until my farrier could come out.
Thank you so much. It is often about the right team supporting you whether you can get through the difficult stages to give our horses the best life. Great to read how you managed this.

I also noticed this. I bought my Shetland as a companion/project, fully aware she'd never be sound enough for any work. She's never been working before either. But she's a fun little field ornament.
Thank you so much. I tried to include every option - but that's a very valid point, thank you and Nasicus for flagging!

Thank you so much. Yes, the final results can be shared. Please can you email me on my university email address so I have your details for sharing in future? I'm including it here but please take out the spaces either side of the '@' C.E.Sealey @ sms.ed.ac.uk

Completed last night. Very thought provoking. Would be interested to see the results.

Thank you so much for completing the survey and your kind comments.

Done, very good survey, sadly I was able to answer the questions from experience so I know the answers are at least accurate for you rather than being what I think I'd do in those situations.
Thank you very much. I'm sorry you could answer it from experience - I'm sure you can understand why I wanted to research this too. It's all too common isn't it.

Very thought provoking. Very interesting to reflect if your making the right decisions. With a previous horse, I had a lot of improvement with joint injections. Limited with another but after a break, he is looking well at the moment, maybe its time for another work up to see if some additonal suppport would help.

Really great survey! Please do post here when you publish, I'd love to follow your work.

The only area I struggled with was the prioritisation sections. Some of them would be "not an option" for me rather than low priority.

Agree, there are limitations with the survey software as this wasn't my original plan - the priority being the top options, but it's hopefully all useful data.

I had a quick look yesterday but will aim to complete today, very pertinent for us as we have a retired coblet, that we are keeping paddock sound on 1 bute/day but who due to his temperament with other horses has to live solo (he can see other horses), he loves human company and interaction but with me working FT and daughter at 6th form and another ridden horse to keep fit there is just not enough hours in the day, and its a constant worry for me. I may have let him go before this winter but daughter just isn't in the right head space to currently so its looking like he will have this summer, but I'm a firm believer in quality over quantity of life.
Thank you. It is so tricky and think a lot of us have had to make these decisions. Each case is so individual. Looks like you have good beliefs and hopefully your daughter will follow with your thoughts in time.

Completed and found it interesting.

The horse I focused on was my last one which had a hock injury that was missed by the first vet I used, despite extensive x-rays and nerve blocks. When it was subsequently identified by a different vet, there was too much scar tissue for successful surgery. He remained lame but the new vet was of the opinion that low level work would not cause pain or any further injury so I did begin to ride him in walk again. Unfortunately I then lost him to colic so don't know how that would have progressed in the long term.
