Oh no.....where?

Pirbright and Elstead

Walkers, riders, etc told to keep away - but ITV news didn't give a precise address

the cattle have shown vessicles around the nose and mouth which is classic of F&M but "may be related to eating contaminated grass"

No information as to whether these cattle are new to the premises or have been there for a long time

Fingers xed

Defra still have a slash and burn policy so it'll be the 2001 slaughter all over again - remember the pictures of Bernard Matthews - defra seem to like killing things....even when there is vaccine available

The goverment like to finish off what they started

. I hope to god its cowpox! Mairi.

If it's an isolated case, DEFRA have a ring vaccination policy now. I am trained by them to lead vaccination teams and assess farms and holding facilities. We have been notified about the possible case but have not been asked to prepare to move into action as yet.

This is my neck of the woods.....so I'm quite concerned as Guildford based(And Pirbright is round the corner from me,so we won't be hacking out!),keeping my fingers crossed! PM has been called back,so guess is quite serious!

In theory (and please dont take this as gospel) if we have a few days of really hot sunny weather it MAY kill off whats on the soil. In wet weather it can last for weeks. The problem is all the other things that are capable of picking it up off the ground and carrying it round like horses, dogs and wildlife.

Biosecurity is a must now.

So if England is a restricted zone and there is a movement ban on livestock can I travel my horses tomorrow?

Yes horse transport should be fine. Obv best to avoid the 3km protection zone though!

This is very bad news for british farming though

They've just had that harbinger of doom - Debbie Reynolds - the same chief vet. officer as in 2001 on the sky news

the movement ban is on cloven hoofed animals - cattle sheep and pigs

BUT the disease can be spread on boots, car tyres and clothes and also affected is the removal or movement of manure/dung

Think of the farmers guys !!! This may stop you moving your horses around, but spare a thought for those of us that are , yet again, living in fear tonight.
