Suspected Case of Foot &Mouth at Elstead/Pirbright Surrey

I hope to god they vaccinate this time..........I know some of the guys roped in to shoot the livestock last time, and tough hard men were reduced to tears by it.

I pray we never again see the burning pyres that haunted the skies before........

DG, I hope you and your cattle are miles away from the affected area.

It lokks like my yard is in the Surveillance area, but just outside the protection area. My friends farm is outside the Surveillance area, so as long as it is contained (fingers crossed, should be safe).

Looks like my lorry is going to have to stay put for a while (don't see the point in risking unnecessary journeys) and I better get a supply of VIRKON tomorrow (not taking any chances, as would hate to be in anyway responsible for spreading this awful disease). I can't believe that on Monday I had a fantastic 3hrs hack across the middle of the protection zone, thank god it was mainly across arable farmland, although we rode beside farms with livestock.

Oh no. Not again.

I'm not sure I can cope with it all again. Such a stressful time and farming has never been the same since with all the red tape in place after 2001.

How on Earth has this happened.

Wonder what disinfectant we'll use this time as Jeyes has been banned hasn't it? Virkon is so expensive when you're getting through it at the rate that we were getting through Jeyes last time.

I'm sure it was. We don't seem to be able to get hold of it anymore anyway. I vaguely remember something about it being banned.

Patches, you were one of first that I thought of.

Do you think that the government is handling the case better than last time, as they seem to be quick to shut all movements down?

We'll have to watch and see. Many of us younger farmers didn't initially realise how bad it was going to be last time.

When they had the epidemic in 1966 cattle weren't moved about so much for slaughter. There were local abattoirs and the disease was apparently more containable as a result.

It's too early to tell what will happen. I feel like I've fallen asleep and gone back six years in time.

Hell no. That's why I'm still typing and not slitting my wrists!

We're on Staffs/Cheshire border. Junction 16 M6....infact you can wave if you ever pass as the motorway cuts through our land!

We were nowhere near the initial outbreak last time, but it soon travelled nationwide. Let's hope this is more isolated, for all of us.

Thanks.

I'll ask at our hardwear shop. There was definitely some reason why we stopped using it last time. Perhaps it wasn't strong enough. I can't remember what we ended up using.

Oooooo no...come to think of it, it was declared as too strong and there were worries it might taint the milk!

Still on sale here.

Fingers crossed this doesnt turn into the disaster it was in 2001.
Thinking of all the farmers on here.

i cant believe it. the thought of 2001 is making me feel sick again now, i cant begin to imagine how all the farmers are dealing with the awful possibilities.

Didn't see this post, just posted in other one. My heart goes out to the farmer involved and everyone in farming. Although I don't farm was in a very badly affected area in the 60s outbreak and not good round here in 2001. Just praying that Defra do a better job of containing it this time.

For us its very scary - we do not breed cattle we buy them from devon and glos as calves to raise. We do not breed because of TB and the problems in the area with it. All the markets have been closed around us.
What did 2001 F&M do to us? We were within the 3 mile radius of another farm which had a confirmed outbreak and everything stopped. Since then we have sold the dairy herd and installed holiday cottages so the families income will not be slashed like last time.

I have a show tomorrow which has stopped all cows, sheep etc from going but horses are allowed. We are asking the farmer next door to us if he is ok for us to go but disinfect everything before we come back. If hes not ok with it then we aren't going =[

Hope they manage to control it. poor farmers!

i think they recommend Vikron as disinfectant

also be careful if your spraying car tyres/undercarriage daily as in 2001 a couple of our vets had problems with corrosion of the lines running under the car (hydrolics etc)
nothing bad bad but something to be aware of.

Jeyes is NOT approved for use against F&M - so no point in buying it

There is no supplies of Virkon left in the control zone so many farms that should have disinfectant barriers cannot put them in place - the SVService have just told people to wait until supplies are delivered !!!!
