Hi All,

So after one issue and another. Now have a lame 16 month old with swelling on her offside hock. Wouldnt say its a huge swelling, probably the size of a 50p on the inside front of the joint.

Now due to a kick injury (from her mum) 7 weeks ago we took xrays as a precaution and was told they were clean, however now the vet is suspecting its OCD.

Would the onset be this quick? Also any success stories to report? Having looked it up the pics im seeing are much more sever than what im presented with- not sure if this is a good thing or not?

Any comments appreciated!

If x-rays were clean 7 weeks ago it is HIGHLY unlikely to be OCD (assuming the x-rays were good - and read properly!) Unless you've been absolutely STUFFING it with high energy concentrates, it is also unlikely it would come on so quickly at this age.

I had an 18 month old colt with this problem in the hock some years ago. He was absolutely hopping lame and the whole joint was the size of a football! We had to box rest him (on very low rations) for a couple of months before surgery - and we gelded him too - then he had surgery and a very good outcome!

Nope Janet she's not had a sniff of hard feed since spring! vet did have the cheek to tell me it was probably due to her ID breeding!

Also the more she walks the better it becomes, but is on box rest and is awaiting xrays before anything else.

If they have missed something on the xrays have i got any comeback on them?

I don't think you have a comeback - detecting OCD on an x-ray (particularly the hock) isn't always straight-forward. It sometimes needs a LOT of views and even then you can't be sure. Other cases are crystal clear. Precautionary x-rays for a suspected fracture due to a kick would require fewer views (and less study of the plates.)

The 'debris' that is OCD can be bone chips or tiny bits of cartilage (my husband joked - when seeing what was removed from my boy's hock - that it was more expensive by volume than cocaine!
