Hi there,

My TB has suspected rotation of the hind pedal bone. Has anyone had experience of this and if so, what treatment/prognosis/outcome was there?

He's going for X-rays etc to confirm this is the case, but would be grateful to hear experiences....feeling really down about it all at the min :(

Rotation in which direction? If in one foot only, rotation downwards in a hind foot would be very unusual. Negative P3 angle in a hind foot (rotation upwards) is not that unusual, and the solution is to get the horse to build a stronger, higher heel. This is difficult in shoes. Is your horse shod behind?

Thanks for your post. Rotation is suspected downwards - again, until I see the X-rays etc its not 100%, but this is what is looking the most likely scenario at the moment, and yes (sorry), looks like both hind feet.

Yes, he is shod all round.

Yes please! Would really appreciate that. Gutted at the moment, my boy has had a pretty tough life and spent the past two years rehabilitating him (ex-racer with all the usual hang ups!), over come so much with him and now this LOL!

Thanks for posting - really grateful!

Solly x

Ahh bless ya its so hard isnt it when you spend so long sorting them and something else gets thrown at you! Dont panic though there are things you can do to get them right again, wont be a quick fix and will be trial and error! Will send you the pics through on a pm, I am having his shoes off this week to start correct trimming and rehab but will let you know what im advised to do re suspected rotation. I dont do shoes in general (but not going to be a barefoot crusader) so it depends which route you decide to follow whether what I do will give you any help but will post for you incase it helps :D

Keep positive though, ive seen some horrendous hoof issues come right x

My mare had a rotated pedal - but in a fore leg - she was put into imprint shoes for a period of time, and they made a massive difference to her - both in her comfort and recovery. She's now basically sound and ridden again (although retired from jumping and we avoid hard ground - but she's also 20 years young!)

Thanks Jaye!

Farrier came this morning and have had his shoes taken off (farrier is brilliant so v.lucky there!), vet coming tomorrow so will hopefully know more soon.

Been a long work in progress this horse! Have had him just over 2 years now and he came with so much baggage he could fill Gatwick on his own LOL! Fantastic horse underneath it all, was in a right state when I got him and promised him then I'd do my best to make it all right but so upsetting along the way!

Thanks for all your support - really does help and very grateful!

Solly x

Sounds like you are doing a fab job Solly keep at it, many reasons for the pedal bone rotating so keep going and keep positive :) Good vet and good farrier are invaulable, keep doing your own research too, especially american sites if you can as they have a lot of case studies to read probably due to the fact theres more people and horses there lol :)

It will all help your boy, have fingers crossed for tomorrow for you. Let us know how you get on x

Thanks! Read through the links Jaye - very interesting. Already feed a fibre only diet as he's had ulcers in the past and he's out 24/7 as stabling sends him (literally) insane. Dread to think how much he's cost me to date but....worth every penny to me LOL!

Have to say, feeling more positive today so hopefully, will be the same after the vet!

Nite all :D
