Quick question, has anyone had suspensory issues without overt lameness (just behaviour). Vet isn’t keen to scan because pony isn’t lame so there’s nothing to block. Thanks

One of my previous horses wasn't lame, just not right. No swelling n the area which I believe is common. Mine was an ex racer so suspensories was high on list. Outcome after a long rehab was not good and he was pts. He was 8.

Mine was not 100%. Not obviously lame but not totally happy in his work and took occasional odd steps on a slope. No changes on xray so brought him to hospital for nerve blocks and scanned. Minor changes diagnosed on scan and treated with shockwave and injected.

Sorry to hear that Fern007
Thank you. He was the most well bred exquisite horse I've had. Absolutely beautiful to look at. Unfortunately he was as good racehorse and won a big race at Ascot. He earned a lot of money. Nothing could be done, he was too far gone. I hope you can find some answers for your pony. No one could possibly say you haven't tried.

Yes. Mine was also not lame and no swelling but was erratic to jump and eventually refused to turn right when under pressure - he was ok generally and you would never know if you just hacked him.

An alternative experience. Vet thought it was hind suspensory (slightly lame), scanned, no result but still diagnosed as such because sometimes it’s not possible to see on scans (my memory is rusty but because the ligament passes behind another structure and a small length of it can’t be seen). Long rehab and shockwave. Still not right. Eventually re-diagnosed as kissing spine thanks to my chiro having doubts and pushing for back x rays and further lameness work up which showed him as functionally lame in 3 legs. It can be a tricky one both to diagnose and treat. (But a positive outcome as since getting him back into work he has been sound for the last 12 years - he’s 24 now).

Yep, I had to push for scans because they told me I was wasting my money. Diagnosed with chronic PSD as a result of scans.
Thanks Scats. When researching I may have found an old post from you saying your horse would stand up when asked for canter and they had psd? (apologies if I’ve confused you with someone else).

I had one with bilateral hind limb suspensory problems thought to be DSLD / ESPA. He was not obviously lame but had increasingly bad behaviour when ridden. However on blocking one suspensory he was lame on the opposite leg. Scans clearly showed extensive degeneration and he was only 6.

I'm another with a not quite right - she'd thrown a decent rodeo display when asked to canter on one rein and it didn't feel like excitement

I actually had a stand up argument with the vet in the yard car park reminding her I was the client and paying so please just scan them. She did and told me they were fine so I booked for hock injections a fortnight later. Her colleague came out and rescanned and found the damage pretty quickly. I'm assuming she'd had a look at the history and prior scans before coming out and thought something was awry.

Yep that was me. It started as her grinding to a halt when asked to canter and swishing her tail/backing up, then it very quickly progressed to slamming the anchors on and just standing up.
