friend has been offered a horse - a very nice coloured ISH only 7 yr old - he is a loss of use now due to damage or strain to his sus lig in hind leg/s...with rest will he be a nice hack or even do any other work later on?? he is very cheap too...what do you guys think?

What purpose is he a loss of use for? eg eventing/showjumping/dressage? He is loss of use for a reason and its not an injury that I think recovers well.

Be ultra careful about what you do on hard or very soft ground, make sure he's well and truly fit before you do anything much, use exercise bandages slung underneath the fetlock to support the suspensory, be rigorous about cold hosing after exercise, use studs if needs be, limit how many times a week you do fast stuff/jumping and he should be fine.

We've kept a horse going after a rear suspensory injury for 5 years (he's still fit and well as a pony club eventer) by observing the above.

Good luck - you'll be fine if you're careful.

Would the previous owner let you speak with the vet who treated the horse? If so it would be worth asking the extent of the damage to the ligament and whether there is much residual scar tissue and the extent of any lesions. At least you might be able to get vet's opinion as to the level of future work.

well as far as I know he has moderate not severe damage to both his hind suspensory ligaments but it isnt from natural weakness it was because of being caught in a gate...
