Have you or a friend had a suspensory ligament operation carried out on your horse. If so, how successful was it please?

Might be better in vets.

I know a horse that did his SL though he never fully recovered (was an eventer) however is a happy hack now. He was on box rest then turned out for a year.

Know of two. One horse is 100% sound now no probs at all. Other one was more recent so is stil on the road to recovery, however I dont think it has worked as well for him, he is back in quiet work and I think he is lame still.

My horse had a bone chip when she was two on the sus lig. I had the choice of box rest or op. Because it was 7mm I decided to leave it. The leg was swollen and I simply turned her out (in at night). The constant movement can cure and it certainly did with my horse. The leg stayed large for a few weeks and gradually went down, she is 6 now, and not a days lameness, never looked back and was glad I did'nt go for the op.

Another horse we owned (race horse) had the operation, because the trainer pushed for it. Two years on and he has not stayed sound. We blamed the scaring and weekening of the ligament from the operation.

Each case is different, I kept a copy of my ex-rays for the first horse mentioned and found an expert in the field based in America. I sent them over to him (free of charge) and he gave me the best advice ever. I am sorry its a few years on now and I no longer have his details. I found him by chance by Googling.

One of the horses in our yard had the procedure with stem cells and it has ben a huge success she has taken the year to get over it but is jumping better than before, she is 8 now.

my chap was operated on for long term inflamantion of both hind suspensories, the operation and recover were a sucess for 12 months then we started to get slight gate problems but then he decloped navicular infront so is now retired. I have no way of know if he would have stayed sound had the navicular not happened.

The de-nerving and removal of tissue op has a pretty good sucess rate as far as I was told. But depends on the circumstances I guess.

my friends 3 year old did a hind suspensory ligament this time last year, and I am happy to say he has been back and ridden away now.
He did in mucking about in the field- and was on box rest for 6 months ( well we dont really do box rest at our yard- we gave him complete box rest for 3 weeks then he stayed in the box at night and wandered the yard (private) during the day- this kept him interested and stopped the stiffness.
It has been a really long process, of walking in hand, 2 hours of turnout building up ( you all know the score) and now he is backed and going brilliantly- she didnt have to operate (vet was didnt recomment in a youngster) and fingers x'd now fine.

Hope you have good luck in your circumstances!

Rossdales have made this quite an easy operation now and the recovery rate is quite good.

However the bilateral denervectomy can grow back and you will still have the same lameness and no insurance cover.

It depends what you want to do with your horse afterwards.

Good luck though.

My laddo had the operation on both hind suspensorys and unfortunately it wasn't successful, he had a catalouge of other problems so i made the decision to have him pts in January.

I was told it had an 80% success rate, good luck, i definately think its worth a try if you have covered every other avenue.
