I know there is a forum regarding theft but as no one has actually done anything wrong, I thought I'd start here!!

Have there been any recent reports of thefts in Bedfordshire?

Just as I was leaving the horses this morning, a neighbour approached and said he'd seen a man standing by the field entrance the previous day, observing the horses. When the man realised he'd been seen, he left. However, the field is located in a village cul-de-sac, and is not visible from the main road. Only residents or workmen would be pass by. The man walked out of the cul-de-sac to the main road through the village, where he was watched getting into a large white van, possibly a Transit.

It just seems a little unusual to be ignored - especially since I've recently bought a young coloured cob!

You've got a great Horsewatch in Bedfordshire, one of the best networks in the country. Might be worth letting them know, so everyone can kep an eye out just in case.

And if he isn't already, then please please please get your horse freezemarked. There is a real spate of stolen coloured's at the moment, even more than usual. It simply isn't worth the risk.
 
Thats a bit worrying. I will definatly be keeping an eye out. Although *touches the whole wooden desk* nothing has happened like that at our yard but most surrounding farms have been done over and completely wiped out.

Hi, Make sure you change your routine at least for a few weeks.

Look out for 'markers' leading to your field and around your field. These can be 'innocent' looking plastic bags on the fence /gate, spray paint on the road near your field.
Often thieves will scout for possible targets weeks in advance, and then leave a marker for others passing through to pick up horses they have earmarked.
My horse was stolen, and he was a coloured - if I had known these things he may not have been taken.

The white van in my view is definately suspicious, can you ask any neighbours to keep a look out for it and take the reg of ANY vehicle which 'doesnt belong' there.
All too often all HW get is a transit no reg - well, then not much can be done.
Please get your horse freezemarked asap - Im sure you will, but the sooner the better.

I hope this is all for nothing, but awareness is key.
 
Is it me or is a lot of this stuff happening in Bedfordshire recently?!

Where abouts are you - PM would probably be best...
 
Thanks for the info!! Will keep my eyes peeled!!

I've never been one to stick to a strict routine, because I'm not on a yard...I used to have problems with kids climbing the fencing and playing in the field, so I find tipping up at different times has always been the best plan!
 
oh - thats worrying!

about a year ago/end of 2006 at the yard i ride at in Thundersley, Essex we had quite a few suspicious people.
We used to have a big, 16.3hh 9 yr old warmblood gelding who i loaned one day a week. he was very flash looking and if he could have been a very good showjumper but wasnt.
anyway, one day the woman in the bungalow suddenly appeared on the yard looking rather worried. we all went to see what she was babbling on about to YO and it turned out that someone had climbed over the 3 big padlocked gates into Boyce's field and was taking photos of him! nobody knew who he was and the woman said he looked quite suspicious

fortunately nothing became of it and we havent seen the person since.

but watch out with your coloured, i was riding out on one of my loan horses, (the coloured cob) and was accused of stealing the horse from someone! her horse had gone missing about a month previously and she was desperately trying to find the horse. her horse was apparantly 14.1/2hh ish about 8/9 years old and was skewbald with a black mane and tail. until i explained to her that i wasnt the owner and that Indie was 14.2, 6 yrs old and his owner had had him about 6 months did stop shouting and asked me to keep a look out for her horse!
 
The most important thing to do is to get your horse Freezemarked and also micro-chipped as soon as possible. Get the hinges on your gate reversed so that the gate can not be simply lifted off it's hinges although this will not stop them from cutting the fence down or reversing through it.

In the interim period I would move your horse to a more secure location where they can not find him.

Be also aware that the registration plates on the vehicle are probably false.
