Hull Area - PM me for exact location
2 men pulled up on our yard arround mid-day 2nd june 08
Silver Transit type Van (quite new) - both registration plates white (not a yellow one on back like normal)
Registration began in 00 so is likley to be fake, I was trying to remember everything so I didnt get the exact registration but it ended in either 266 or 226
The driver was noticeabley fat, mid 30's looking with short, straight mousey hair
The passanger was Early 20's short dark hair, and dressed trendy, and spoke with an Irish accent
They were trying to sell me a powerwasher, (which is identical to what people on the following thread have reported- at the other end of the country http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/show.../page/0#3139918
and then a generator, but when I declined they continued to sit there and look about, asking where the "boss man was, and what times people would be back that I could speak to"
I said theyd be someone down every hour day and night as the cat had just had kittens (said this as a deterant)
This is not hearsay, this is not a friend of a friend, this happened today, on my yard, to me -
POLICE HAVE BEEN INFORMED - Lucille x

Would you mind PMing me to let me know roughly whereabouts you are? Something similar happened to me last year when I lived in W Yorks and I am in E Yorks now.

We had similar in oxon a few weeks ago, although van was red with magnetic stick on vinyls on the side, driver was alone polish or similar trying to sell jet washers and generators, wanted to know whether boss lived on site etc etc. I said I didnt need anything and he didnt get past my gate! - he also tried the people we know with quad bikes so I think they were generally after items rather than horses, different group by sound of it!

this has been goin on in wales for some time. it has been on the bhs sites locally. the men (usually irish) turn up trying to sell pressure washers and generators, but in fact are looking at the horses and trailers. I had a pair turn up at my house a few months back in a red kia 4x4. i reported it to the police straight away with the number plates (unfortunately I cannot still remember them). they kept asking if the boss was in and I was like who then they said my father. Im 26 I am the boss. they offered me pressure washers but I told them i wasnt interested. No way did they have pressure washers in the back of their 4x4. the driver that got out was short and well built with a strong irish accent. the passenger didnt get out. I have fields round the house with two horses and a trailer parked out the front. I reported it to the police but north wales police didnt really seem too interested and i let the local horse owners know that they were about. i had seen a lot about it on local bhs sites. Ive not seen anything since but im not sure if poss they have moved on now as everyone was reporting them at one point very much like the sightings now. Anyway thought Id let you all know what I know dont know if it is of any help. I personally dont know of any horses stolen but just that I did experience these guys turning up that everyone was warning against.

could you get me a link to the info on your local bhs site please as I cant find anything on the yorkshire one xx

This van was in Hollym, East Yorkshire at teatime last night and knocked on my door. Needless to say that we have upped our security and I have warned the neighbours.

Yep we have had exactly the same about 3 weeks ago. Wanting to sell 'horse washers' (its what they called them lol) and generators.

We said no thanks and then they asked about the 'boss' and was he around etc. Told them he lived on site but was currently tending his sheep and would be back soon.

We are in Buckhold, Berkshire (Near Newbury).

I believe a load of horses were stolen last night in the Lichfield area, Staffs. No more details than that for now.

Or possibly not!

Having read the news item on H and H website.

this is probably the same story which was circulated the other day and proved to be a hoax if people look around on this very usefull forum there other posts about this and confrmation it was a hoax

Yes but it happened to me at my yard, and I saw them with my own eyes, and spoke to them myself, so the fact that two dodgy looking irish men turned up wishing to sell powerwashers and generators is definatley not a hoax

Wether the other topics that linked them to horse thefts are, I am unable to comment

Its so hard to distinguish the truth on a forum, for every topic saying it is a hoax, and that the police confirm this, theres another topic saying its not a hoax, and another police force confirming this xx

Well yes the whole thing about horses being stolen in staffs wasn't true but the suspicious sightings most defiantely have been happening!

as i have ended up unwittingly in the middle of this as my van reg is the one often reported i can confirm some sightings are genuine the original in derbyshire was genuine 1st the europeans in the field who had nothing to do with me then the horse show on the 18th which was actually me and has been explained as we were there as horse lovers and i am a photographer as is my son who was with me and my wife who rides and has looked after horses for over 20 yrs
this has now been cleared up as posted on the hvrc website
this is where my registration 1st appeared and was sorted by derbyshire police as i have spoken to many police forces now many of them have said even though there have been sightings of my van and number apparently reported to police according to various forums when i have spoken to them they have said the only one they have actually got as my plate now appears to be the 1st which has been sorted
many other quoted occasions are actually unconfirmed by police across the country
im not saying anyone is lying or spreading hoaxes as many have said please be carefull about forwarding messages or sightings unless they are confimed by police or first hand knowledge

sorry to hear of this as there are going to be genuine sightings and as you have done the best thing is to post on here and to the police
many people asked if i wished for my number plate to be completely removed from sites which had posted it as a warning but i asked for it to remain along with the description of my genuine vehicle it is a case of striking a balance between genuine reports like your own and people who may receive the initial txts not realise that there have been updates and then pass them on
i myself would like to see the thieves if caught dealt with in the old fashioned way ( it worked for dick turpin ) however thats another story alltogether
