I have a livery yard in East Sussex; no facilities though! ... Barely even got hard standing :-)
I know many local yards, though. Whereabouts are you based, how far do you want to travel, etc!

Not that local to me, then!
That said, loads of places in Lewes, Ditchling and Chailey area, but I don't know the area well enough to recommend, Sorry!

Crockstead springs to mind - they're revamping the place, I believe, and have heard favourable reports from there. I'm sure someone more informed will come along shortly!
Really near to Brighton and some of the best facilities in the area

Sorry to hijack your post but if anyone reading this thread knows of any DIY yards with AYTO in Horsham area could you please get in touch.

Really sorry OP I don't know the Brighton area, good luck in your search :) xx

I'm a livery at Crockstead, I would say it's more of a 20-25min drive from Brighton uni with traffic etc at peak times. Don't go off the prices on the website as they are incorrect :)
Any questions you want to know just drop me a pm :)

When I was a student in Brighton I kept mine at Katrina's in black stone lane, Henfield way. Only 10-15 min drive from Brighton and and was a super yard with the royal l. centre and hickstead within short hacking distance so could go to shows every week including BSJA, BD and unaff. Can't reccomend the yard highly enough, it's friendly, well run and has good facilities and lots of hacking round the farm. Her number is 07843 487625.

know this is an old thread but looking into livery in this area too!

I start my first year of uni at sussex in sept and looking for places to bring pony with me ... drove down there today wtih my grandparents to have a look round, but rather unsucessful as we dont know the area and didnt know where to look

we saw a few grass livery places driving around but had no way of getting in touch with anyone to enquire so that was a bit pointless.
we did however find a lovely yard in rottingdean (im pretty sure) - new barn farm. a little pricier than i was looking for (originally after grass livery) but good facilities, amazing t/o and hacking and nice people by the looks of it.
Does anyone have any experiences of this yard or know of any in the area with cheapish diy/ grass livery with nice hacking and maybe even pushing it to have an arena too?

please PM me or message on here, am getting stressed at the thought of not having anywhere to move pony come september!

Hi Sam, this is my yard now I think I saw you looking around today when I was cleaning the water buckets, the yard is fantastic (newbarn) i've been here for 3 weeks now but I couldn't fault them what so ever, my mare is on assisted diy and everyone there is so friendly I'd deffinatly reccomend it, feel free to pm me ask me questions but it is a really nice yard x

omg thats so spooky for you to reply! haha yep was definately me you saw walking around the yard earlier today - thank you for replying!
Assisted diy is what i would be looking into too, dont think i could afford part livery and am so used to mucking out 7 days a week in winter i think i'd miss it if i didnt have to do it anyway! Honestly looks like my ideal yard though with wicked hacking, an arena and really nice turnout ... i hope i can manage my money enough to be able to keep the pony there :-)
how do you get to the yard and do you know if buses are regular up and down the road outside as think that would be how i'd get to the yard, or poss cycle if not too far. also are you able to buy hay/straw from the yard or do you have to organise that yourself if your assisted diy (if you even know after just three weeks there!) and do you know if any horses there summer out 24/7 if thats possible?
sorry for all the questions :o

I also know most of the yards around that area... Grew up in portslade. Henry Turrells yard has fantastic facilities and is just next door to holmbush centre ( mc Donalds) it's called Happy valley riding school, slonk hill farm, also, foredown tower has a huge yard, can't remember the name of it for the life of me though. I'm sure you've had lots of replies, but if you'd like any other help, just let me know...

On another note, can someone please tell me the owners names at new barn farm in rottingdean .... It used to belong to a family friend and would love to get back in contact if it's still theirs

Xx

I love it there its nice, I don't drive so I also get the bus, to get to Rottingdean I either get on the 2 (which takes you all round the houses but stops 10seconds outside the yard) or you can walk down to the coast and busses down there are about every 10mins or so but it takes about 10minutes to get to the bus stop but im pretty lazy :P haha ..

My mares on haylage so I pay per haynet (think its like £1.50 a net or something like that) I think my friend pays about £5/6 for a small bale of hay, then my mares on straw and the yard owner gets it all in from the farmer (he gets the big bales and then splits it between (i think about 5 of us) so it works out cheaper .. aslong as you dont take the P using loads and loads of straw then its fine .. i think mines worked out that I can put about 6 sections in a week if i wanted to but her bed is massive and really dont need 6 sections a week shes quite a neat mare, or theres shavings that you can get at the yard about £6 a bale or something but I havnt really looked around for better prices because I don't really need to because they work it out really fair and dont try mug you off if that makes sence?

All the horses have to come in at night, because although the grazing is really good, it just saves the grazing a bit if that makes sence? esp as theyl be on it in the winter.

Its a nice yard I like it :)

Ah great! Is there anywhere you mentioned which you would reccommend and is easy distance from sussex uni on public transport? just want to get as many opinions as i can before i make a decision!

When i was at new barn farm today, i spoke to a man called robbie (think he deals with the racehorses there but could be wrong!) and he said his mother in law runs the diy livery though didnt get her name!

ah good to know i'd be able to get there okay by bus - dont really mind how long it takes to get there as nothing can be worse than my mammoth 2 hour journey to see my pony at the minute! Do you go from falmer side or have any idea how long it'd take to get there?

And hay/haylege and straw prices sound really fair especially if they're turned out during the day so guess you wont get through too much!

Also dont think that having to come in at night will be much of a problem as would help to control my mares weight which can get a bit out of control when shes out 24/7 on good grass in summer lol

Thank you much for your help :-) hope to poss see you down there in sept/oct time!!

No I go from the coast side, I used to live near brighton uni and used to take me about 30mins by bus to get there? because all the busses will take you to the old stein/sea front .. then the coast busses are every 5mins or so then its 10mins down the road by coast bus then few mins walk up to the yard, it wont take you that long and you only have to go once a day not twice.

I actully spoke to my friend about moving my mare to happy valley, but it worked out the same price but futher away from me .. I work at the local hospital which is about 10/15mins away from newbarn and i worked out by bus that it would take me about an hour to get to work but there a nice family who run it (henry turrell is my very good friends cousion) and newbarn in portslade is just DIY, they have good factilities but the last I heard they had quite a long waiting list but that is further by busses but it all depends on what your after etc give them a ring and see what they say things may be different now!

Rottingdean is ideal for me because 1, its local bus routes and 2, its about 10mins from my house by car because i can go over the dual carrige way and down falmer road (thats if i can steal a lift from someone), and 3, ive got all my friends around the area my horse knows the area and its got hacking distance to the shows and plus ive been in rottingdean for about 7years now? lol x

Gypsygirl... Your very good friend isn't called Lisa by any chance is she? She's also a good friend of mine.

I would recommend both yards mentioned but I'm afraid I don't know about public transport as was always able to grab a lift...

Newbarn must have changed hands since our friends had it, her name was Trish and daughters name Sarah.

Xx

Egerdenfarmstud: carlas my friend lisas daughter but I know all of lisas family because I went to nursery and everything with carla when we was younger we used to be joined to the hip lol! But then last year of primary school carla moved to shoreham so didn't see each other as much.

I used to ride down happy valley with ester and Lucy teaching very friendly people!

My old gypsy mare is down newbarn in portslade with her new owners I have a lot of friends at newbarn in portslade aswell.

It's amazing who you come across! Lol it was lisa though who said for me to go to happy valley but it's too far for me with busses x

Google Gemsbrook Dressage, they have fabulous facilities. The lady who owns it is a dressage rider/trainer, but she was an international showjumper, so she really knows her stuff.

Oh... Maybe we know each other too - I am good friends with all of the Pay's... Inbox me your true identity if you wish! I was also at foredown as a child ( 18 months - 9 years ) it was anthonys ( owners ) sisters best friend that I was talking about earlier that I though owned the yard you're talking about in rottingdean .... Small world hey!

P.s. Sorry to totally change course on your original post op xx
