I have two stallions and normally they are swabbed each year within guidelines of the French National Stud. This year one is in the UK. A UK vet has told me that 3-4 swabs are required for 'breeding' purposes and that one swab is only suitable for transport.

Curious as ALL breeding stallions in France have to be swabbed, but only one is required, Urethral Fossa to obtain a French covering book.

So what are the risks if only one swab is taken?

For CEM, they need swabs from 3 different parts of the sheath/penis. Used to be great fun with Raj as he saw NO reason he should let it all hang out for a vet. They are also blood-tested for EVA.

I vaccinate for EVA, costs 200 euros per jag in France!! I think just £60 in the UK.

My CB is a bit shy too. The vet managed with some manual assistance and thought he was a really gentle giant.

I am now even more curious to know why France is only asking for one swab for CEM.

Yep - EVA jab isn't too dear - though you have to have blood tests before - and then a couple of weeks after vaccination.

There's a useful article about CEM testing in the Merck manual - http://www.merckmanuals.com/vet/rep...large_animals/contagious_equine_metritis.html

The best thing I EVER saw was junior vet - sitting cross-legged on the ground UNDER my stallion - trying to pull his equipment down! I did explain to her that 999 out of 1,000 stallions would kick her in the head to cure such stupidity!
