hi all

have the chance to buy a swain and humphries saddle of girl at yard.
she does not know what type of tree it is and wether it can be adjusted???

it is dressage with short straps and a serge lined half panel

does anyone have this saddle and know if it can be adjusted?
are they comfy and how much it costs to get adjusted??

it is like trying to get hold of the pope contacting barrie swain!!!

I had a semi-flex and loved it. Bought it on the basis that it was adjustable and it would continue to fit the horse. However, she had white hairs over her withers when her coat came through, and I couldn't get hold of Barrie to readjust. Lost £1,000 on the saddle and totally disillusioned. Doesn't matter how good your product is if the after service is so shoddy. Unless your horse really won't go in anything else, I would avoid like the plague and buy something which has some resale value (I've now got Albions, and the horse loves them just as much, and I didn't have to remortgage to purchase).
Be careful - I'm not saying the saddles aren't good, but adjustable only means adjustable if you can actually get anyone to do it for you!

Good luck :-)

Barrie's work number is 01922 646468. he's not always easy to get hold of, but his right-hand man, Dave, is... he'll probably answer the 'phone. he's very helpful, and organises all work that comes in (alterations etc) to their place in Walsall.
that one looks the same as mine, which are all adjustable... they're alterable to about 1/2 to 1 width fitting, depends on the width, the horse, etc. so, don't buy a narrow to go on a wide, or vice versa, kind of thing.
if you send it to them with a wither pattern, it will be altered to fit.
honeybee, i'm sorry to hear you couldn't get hold of Barrie to have your saddle altered. tbh though if there were white hairs over the wither area it sounds as if either the saddle didn't fit at all (was pressing down along spine?! big no-no obviously) or perhaps winter rugs were rubbing there. i have used Barrie's saddles for decades now and NEVER EVER had one rub or cause white hairs.
OP, if Kay is in your area, she's an excellent fitter, sooo knowledgeable, and you'll probably get the alteration done slightly quicker if it is done through her, if you are in a hurry...

usually around £70 for adusting at barries - thats with you taking your own wither template. not inc postage if you dont live local-

And if anyone has a hugely wide semiflex they are thinking of parting with I could do with a 17.5 inch - GP or dressage. PM please.
