Hello there,

has anyone heard of this make? I have just acquired a saddle of this make and cant for the life of me find another one!

I have found the website of the manufacturers and they dont sell saddles anymore. The other products they sell are extremely expensive and I wondered if anyone could enlighten me any further on the make!

Thank you in advance....

Lucky you!
They were a very well known make some years ago, quite exclusive like Giddens or Moss Bros, those sorts of firms. I'm not sure if they had their own saddlers or whether they had them made and badged for them by somebody else but you can virtually guarantee that it would be very good quality.

These saddles, like all the various things this company sold were at the very top end of the market, they still sell the best hunting whips available, lucky you!

Wowzers!

Well I recently bought a pony for my children and she came with this saddle (the previous owner actually apologised for giving me a naff saddle!).

I have emailed someone who is a saddler to ask for their advice on it and he seems very excited! I have emailed him the pics too (I think he is on this site actually!).

Ooooh how exciting!!!

The Swaine must be Barrie Swaine? In which case, he is making saddles under the name Humphries and Swaine with Kay Humphries. They have serge panels and are gorgeous - I have owned one before and want another!

I have heard of Barry Swaine but he must have gone it alone!

ANyone else know if it is the same person? I dont know that it is as the company have been about since 1750!

No, there is no connection, other than the similarity of names, interestingly, Swaine Adeney was featured in tonight's Antique Roadshow, where some hunting whips were valued at serious money!

I too own a Swaine Adeney Brigg (although I do beleive it was originally Swaine Adeney) saddle. My saddle is an old fashioned yet extremely comfortable hunting saddle. I use it for hacking, and some cross country jumping as I prefer it to my jumping saddle. We think it is well over 50 years old, and since I've owned it since around 1992 I've had a new tree (wooden) made for it. My saddler managed to contact the gentleman who had made the previous tree, and although retired (or semi retired) he made my new one. All the trees are signed and numbered. It came with my previous horse, and I had it adjusted slightly to fit my mare approx 10 years ago. They are beautiful saddles and if looked after well will last for years. My saddler reflocked mine with the best lambswool so extremely soft on my mare's back.

Enjoy!!
