Hi I have a new Fell pony, 14yo, very strong and when going in to canter I have no control or brakes. He tucks his head on his chest and I am unable to stop him - he's more like a train.
I am an older rider 64, only 5'2 and hope to continue to show him but these boys are big and strong. He's obviously been allowed to lean on the bit and this is what he knows once he steps beyond a trot.
I am working on re balancing him and me tbh, but it is going to be a long haul. In the meantime I want to try to show him ridden. Someone at a show mentioned trying a Swales and then another a double bridle. I am riding him in a Myler ported Pelham currently which allows me to lift his off side to help balance him. He is fine to hack as only roads and I can use a snaffle but brakes are not good in an arena or at a show I suspect, though I haven't actually ridden him in a show environment yet!!
Any help much appreciated.
