Just got home from competing at Swallowfield dressage ,he went nicely but the marks today were low. Came 1st in prelim with 67% and 2nd in Novice [judge stopped me and gave me an error because he thought my 15 meter circle too big, it was about 17 meters, why stop me just mark accordingly} only got 63.5% and winner got 64% ,went well but a mean judge.
Roland Tong was riding in the warm up area in draw reins ,maybe the horse was not competing, we didn't stay to see if it was later, but HE was competing later and rule 57 clearly states that No horse may be ridden in draw reins even if not competing. We mentioned it but nothing was done as he is the rider at that centre. In the rules it says he should have been eliminated from the show but if the owner of the horse owns the centre what do you do. It was a lovely horse that didn't need draw reins anyway. Us lower mortals shouldn't complain about such things ,maybe?

Well done. What a strange thing for the judge to do, surely a mark down would of been enough? As for the draw reins, sounds like they didn't want to do anything in case he didn't let them use the centre again, still if he is not following rules he should be eliminated.

That is shocking. I would write to British Dressage or the Area Rep.

Well done on your placings tho

I had the same thing in my first aff comp. It was a training day and there were loads of people watching. Firstly it was a 15m circle back to the track in counter canter, which I did. The judge range the bell and said I went the wrong way

and didn't show any counter canter. I was really confused then, so I went back and rode exactly as I did before and got a 7

. I watched the vid back I had clearly done the counter counter the first time. Then I did a 17m instead of a 15m and she rung the sodding bell at me again. I was so flustered.

Are u sure he wasnt just riding one of his other horses before competing others later in the day?
Cant believe ROland would be so silly as to blatently go against the rules.
Well done on your placings tho. Had no idea you were so close to us!

I talked with a girl at the event yesterday who was livid over the judge in the dressage there, apparently she rang the bell, let her start then rang it again ,leapt out of her car, told her she thought her bit was lopsided and proceeded to yank hard to straighten it. She then sent her to the stewards outside who said it was adjusted dead level, then allowed her to carry on. Said horse is neurotic about anyone touching his mouth and wouldn't then settle to do his test..
She got placed but felt it was several placings lower due to the judge, why on earth didn't she just stop her and say something instead of touching the tack?
She wasn't sure if it would do harm to complain in case she ever was judged by her in future..
I agree, no point in stopping during test, better to allow you to finish and write on the sheet..

doesn't matter if he was competing it or not

Totally agree, clearly stated in rule 57, he should have been eliminated from all classes on the day and fined £25. Write to British Dressage.

He possibly was not even competing that day. As he is based there he would need to work his horses at some point in the day. If competition was running all day then guess he would have to use the warm up arena alongside the competitors?

Sorry, just re-read your original post and realised he was competing in later classes.

As for the judge stopping you, that particular judge does seem to do some odd things! Inwardly cringe when I see that name.

My 15m circles get a bit out of control but I've never been stopped (thank God!)

Its a toughie re the draw reins - clearly against the rules and very unfair that some seem to be exempt but I totally understand your concerns about competing there again if you push it further...

As i have said to you in a post earlier... beware of false gods... and i am sorry there are a lot like him and his like. Unfortunately many pray at the alter... great metaphors! Another well known 'producer' of horses rode ALL his poor young mares in drawreins at the Hanoverian mare grading the other week. Funny thing was all his horses were very gobby when the reins were taken off and none of the other horses had the same 'issues'.
In VERY' rare instances they help..like when hacking out my VERY elastic stallion by one of my staff its just there, loose if required, bearing in mind i dont even ride in a double bridle at home working to GP.
It wont do you any good complaining to BD Roland is a bit of a BD 'darling' and they will come up with some BS as to why he does not come under the same rules.
I used to be based at a very famous competition venue and always worked my horses either before or after the comp if they were young and only rode in the warm up on horses that were not going to cause anyone else problems. Thats just one of the reasons being based at such a venue is difficult .On comp days as you should work around them not them around you. Roland does not do early.. or sweating.....

Oh dear, I've never encountered anything like that doing BD, perhaps I better make sure I avoid some venues as I seem to get some kind of red mist appear in fornt of my eyes when I see people breaking the rules if they are enforced for others. I hate unfairness with some kind of destructive passion. I'm annoyed about what carthorse says happended and I was not even there

. If I was there I'd not be able to let it drop

Sometimes you have to think of yourself, it wouldn't of helped us. I would just love to sit on that magnificent horse but not sure I could. It was lovely and very placid and soft and forward .God knows why he had them on. The other horse he was working just ground its teeth the whole time! but again very nice
