A friend of mine has contacted me this morning to say that there have been 6 horses put down with suspected swamp fever recently in west cornwall.

Does anyone know anything about this?

I have looked on the defra website, and there is nothing there. I would have though if it was suspected or actual swamp fever, then it would be on there, as they have to announce it as it is a notifiable disease?

Any info would be great thx

First, horses have to have had positive tests to be pts, suspicion is not enough

There have been a number of cases of Atypical Myopathy recently in various parts of UK which does usually result in horses pts

As you say nothing on DEFRA--we will have to check again tomorrow.

Dont panic, unless your horse is an import which may have come from Rumania bought through certain dealers
So far NONE of the positive cases have spread the disease to other horses nearby.

That's what I was thinking cuffey - I think that when the cases were in devon, even before they were confirmed, they were listed as suspected on the defra website.

One of my friends lost her horse to atypical myopathy - so awful :(

I mainly wanted to put my friend who phoned me at the crack of dawn this morning about it straight - as she did sound like she was panicking :(
