hi how is swamp fever carried and is the a vacunation for it as my friend told me today that one of his dealer friends phoned him and has hade it on his yard last week and has put 4 horses to sleep .
so if it was comfirmed by in defra wiltshire on 19/1 from imported horses and this yard is in bristol the must of been a conection somewhere ,but i supose dealers go to auctions and could carry the virus on there clothes or boot or hands if they look in the horses mouths think i will ask my vet if the is a vac to be on the safe side
hum you would think so but im not going to call my friend a liar id not even herd the name swamp fever until he said it ,the yard owner told him he hade it ,i dont think a vets can tell the media because of legal matters but he should comfirm it with defra id like to think ,think im going to email defra to see if the are anymore reported cases
Swamp fever is a viral disease, it's transmitted mainly via blood ie. large biting insects, contaminated blood products including plasma, contaminated veterinary products.
There is no vacination available to prevent the disease.
There has been no update on DEFRA website since 20th Jan
The OIE report said 2 horses had been put down
The update on 29/01/10 just says follow up continues

Can anyone tell me why we are importing horses from Romania, if swamp fever is rife there?
[/ QUOTE ]
Makes no sense does it
Ask the dealers why--they presumably buy very cheap (meat price in Rumania very low) import whole batches anything any use is sold for riding others end up at Potters.
Legal exports from Rumania should have clear Coggins tests but meat horses can leave Rumania untested. Virtually no checks at European Borders and hey presto they arrive here untested
Please sign the Petition to get the Tripartite Agreement tightened which makes it easy to import these horses and ask your friends to sign as well
Thank you--for the health of UK horses.
