Swamp fever

I was reading in my horse magazine about swamp fever last night and it said that any horse tested to have the disease would have to be destroyed. It then went onto to say that if a horse was destroyed, the government would offer compensation on £1!?:confused: Now is this a mis print, cos to me it seems like the government are taking the mick a bit here!? :(
Just wondered if anyone else had heard about this and if they knew why a sum of £1 is offered!?
 
Thanks for that:) I have read the post and will listen to the pod cast later when I have more time. It is obviously very scary and no compensation would make up for the loss of a horse, but I was just wondering how they have decided on the sum of £1? Was it just a figure picked out of thin air or is there any reason behind it? I mean you can hardly buy anything with £1- a bag of chocs if you're lucky!
 
My short term memory is rubbish so even though I only listend to the podcast yesterday I can't actually remember if they discussed the reasoning or not :O

I would say though that having such a nominal amount of compensation is unfair as UK horse owners cannot do anything to prevent their horses from getting Swamp Fever and the reason it has been introduced into the national herd is due to the failure of DEFRA and other authorities to hold enforce the law. It also encourages people *not* to report if their horse has it or is a carrier. Ridiculous state of affairs
