I know these posts have been done time and time again, but would I be able to tow a 16.3hh horse (approx. 600kg) with a short wheel based Shogun? Probably the 2.5TD.

I have a box at the moment, but may need to sell it. I dont have the money to runs something like a Range Rover on a day to day basis. I will not be going far, normally no further than a 10 miles radius of the yard. No major hills and not likely to be going on muddy showgrounds, most of the places I go have car parks.

If yes, does anyone have one and are they reliable, and economical? I will be 25 soon so insurance should not be major, and will be getting dad to drive it to shows as dont have the money for my trailer test atm.

I've not done the maths and worked out weight but yes, I reckon it would be ok. The 2.8td has a bit more grunt for travelling two horses but if it is just one then the 2.5 should be fine.

My YO has the LWB and tows two big ones with hers. I dont think im going to be able to afford to run a LWB one though.

I will be on a very tight budget next year as person who part loans my horse will be having a baby, so its either sell box and clio and get a trailer & 4x4 or find someone else to share my horse.

Hi i have a swb 2.5td pajero, have towed all shapes and sizes with it with no probs, can be a bit juicy on the towing front but it gives such a smooth ride for the horses i wouldnt be without mine plus its automatic so a lovely lazy drive for me too.

I have the SWB 2.5TD and it tows really well. It has a max tow weight of 2.5 tons. My trailer is 860Kg and my 16.3hh is around 560kg leaving me loads to spare - even if you follow the guide of not exceeding 85% of max tow weight. I have towed two with absolutely no problem.
Good luck!

i had to sell our lorry and car and bought the 2.8TD lwb and trailer it was much to juicy doing 25 to a gallon had to sell it and having a rethink
