Sweat bumps and really itchy skin - antihistamines?

So my horse sweats a lot and I've had issues with him coming up in bumps when he gets too hot. Last winter he was fully clipped but he had to have 2 steroid injections to ease his terrible itchiness which I would rather not do again as he's a good doer ID and there is a risk of laminitis. I use malaseb to shampoo him regularly. This year he's not as bad but still has some bumps and twitches under saddle. I read that turmeric paste might help so I've tried that and it doesn't seem to be helping. So my question is, has anyone tried antihistamines for itchy lumps and did it help? If it did, what dose did you use? I don't want to feed oil due to the calories. TIA

My sisters ID x mare is the same. My sister has started feeding her salt as it is an antihistamine. Not much improvement yet but she has only just added the salt so early days.

My welsh cross mare is allergic to lots of things and gets itchy and outbreaks of hives that require steroid injections. We (touch wood) are keeping on top of it by avoiding overrugging, ibis rub hot clothing and feeding equifeasts fight back.

I have used a detox for skin issues, one livery had been treated by the vet several times with no real solution, a couple of weeks on NAF detox and the bumps went never to reappear, if ever I get similar issues I use this before getting the vet as they are nearly always diet related and need treating from the inside.

My very food intolerant mare had a similar problem, OP. The cure was to remove all cereals and refined sugars rom her diet - funnily enough she was absolutely fine with alfalfa.

Ive done the whole food thing with molasses free etc. He only has chaff and fast fibre so I'm pretty sure it's not a diet issue. He just gets really hot and sweaty. He is fully clipped so cannot be naked but is normally in a 100g rug day and night in the winter.

My mare suffers from similar issues. My vet advised to use a cotton sheet next to her skin at all times as it breathes better than the nylon lining all rugs seem to come with these days. I also use cold water mostly for washing off as hot/warm water seems to irritate her more. I have used anti-histamines too but didn't really notice any difference. NAF de-tox has helped too when lumps and bumps linger for too long. Talcom powder on sweaty bits has also stopped her from rubbing herself raw, e.g around muzzle, girth area and tail! Also I do not wash rugs/saddlecloths in washing powder if it can be helped, if they are super dirty then they get several rinses before being worn again!
