I know it's hot but our 19yo is sweating in his nice cool stable. We know he has unspecified metabolic problems. has anyone else come across this problem?
Unfit horses sweat a bit more, my unfit youngster was very sweaty today (despite being a skinny little thing!) , my relatively fit pony had some sweat flecks and my super fit horse was not sweating at all (all outside) . The fat and unfit pony was dripping !
Bought them all in and were fine inside but still very warm, and I have very cool brick stables.
So maybe being older he isn't in so much work? and sweating due to that?
My mare is 27 and she's had 2 showers today with the hose and felt much better!!
If you can't shower your horse, then you can sponge down with cold water....they love it!
Yes Hoof prints you are right, he is actually semi retired so not very fit at all, but all he was doing was standing in his cool stable. I just wondered if anyone else had a similar problem and could suggest a cause/solution. Thanks ,though , for your answer.
Mine was sweating in the field and her stable was too hot so I sponged her off and stood her in the shade for an hour on the yard where there was a slight breeze. She looked a lot happier then and went and grazed.
None of ours were sweating today, but the two older ones came over while I was showering the pups. They both enjoyed having the hose turned on them, the appy even had a drink out of the spray head
I give mine a hose down and stand them in the cold, they love it and I make sure they have access to a salt lick as sweating will make them loose salts. (as well as lots of fresh water but that goes without saying ! )
I do also have a giant fan on the yard, that I have previously stood in the stable after dismounting and realising that without a breeze it is suddenly a LOT hotter than up the field ! Not used that this year yet though as start riding the horses at either 6am or 7pm
