What do you do with your hat if it's all sweaty after you have ridden and is there anything you can spray in them to help stop mildew or that ' sweaty' smell?

All the stuff that I use on a regular basis, ie hat, boots and chaps etc I keep in a very large locked trunk at my yard so I don't have to ferry it back and forth all the time. When I've ridden I then put my hat in a cotton draw- string bag and put it in my box. Today when I went to use it, it was still damp from yesterday. eeewww! ( I had to throw my spare hat away as it was covered in mildew )

Not too sure if the best thing would be to leave the hat out of the box and hanging up somewhere to let it air or to get a spray of some sort. What does every one else do please.

Charles Owen Deoderiser! :D
-Then decided it was too expensive and put lavender in with water into a spray bottle. Works lovely.. smells even better!
I leave my hat out of bag and box :D
It hanging on a nail, in the tackroom. :D

Scrunch up some newspaper and stuff it inside your hat - doesn't need to be packed in, just enough to fill it up - and leave it to dry out overnight (this works with your boots too!)

I have a sweaty hat. There, I 've said it. I have left it out, hanging up and that has helped and I will be getting something to spray it with but letting the air get to it is the best thing.

I mentioned it to my saddle fitter the other day and she mentioned that she uses a black panty liner stuck on the inside of hers! Genius?

BEWARE: I remember reading on here a while back that someone had done this and then taken there hat off after a lesson and ended up with a panty liner stuck to their head. You have been warned!

When it has dried spray some dry shampoo in it and then brush it off again.... smells nice and your hair will smell fresh each time you ride, panty liner idea sounds great until it sticks too your head!!

Was going to say wear a plastic bag on your head that will keep hat clean, then you will only have to worry about the rivers of sweat running down your face!!

I swear by my Tipperary Driving helmet, it has saved my life [he was a bit sharp when young], it never sweats up and gives all round protection, I don't know if it is pas and so on, but I know it protects me and is so light, I once wore it in Morisssons!

I always store mine in the open and either end up or hang up so the air can get in, really helps. That and a spray of fresh laundry stuff every now and again keeps it fresh.

I leave mine hanging up too during the winter in a tack room - in the summer it goes in a chest in the field (with my horses) never have a mould/mildew problem - however i find my hat really starts irritating my forehead when its been on a while :(
I like the dry spray shampoo idea - i have some baptise i will try :)

Our local Morissons is a bit like that too ,especially before a bank holiday!:D

I keep mine in the boot of the car but if it is a bit damp I always take it home and dry it properly. I can't stand that musty smell that things get if they've been left damp, I hate it so much that I would never be able to put a musty smelling hat on my head and would have to throw away and replace a hat that got smelly. I find that by letting my hat dry properly each time it doesn't get smelly and I usually have to replace it because I have fallen off onto it (not that often hopefully!)

Please can someone explain to me why no-one makes hats with lining that can be removed and washed? Surely Velcro is not that scarce and you could have a flap to stop it sticking to your hair...

I use a bandana under my hat, and wash it daily, works a treat!

When I first read this I thought it said Bannana!!!! lol I have ordered some hat de-oderiser, will stuff it full of newpaper and leave it out and hanging in my tack room to see if that helps!

+1 for this.
Well...sort of...I always wear a buff with my hat - like a bandanna but no need to fiddle about with a knot.
