I have an 17 yo TB, unclipped, stabled and rugged with a medium rug. Despite it being cold outside he is sweating up on his neck, but not on his body. To touch, it's a cold sweat, not the kind you'd get after hard exercise. He's in great form, his overall body temp is in the normal range and I'm tempted to give him a Trace clip to see does it help him. This happened last winter as well after we lost his companion, but he has a mate now so it's not that he's fretting over anything. Has anyone else had this happen to theirs and if so what can you advise. Thanks in advance

.... remove the rug? If he is unclipped, a good weight and otherwise healthy he probably doesn't need it. Horses are steppe animals and can tolerate quite cool temps.

Is he in work? If so I'd get a 100g rug rather than suddenly remove the whole thing and have a filthy horse to try and tack up! If he's retired then I agree it's really mild so try taking it off all together or rug at night? (Although I've given up on this with my retired as he was cold over night but generally rolled just before I got there to rug in the evening!)

He's in very light work, due to dark nights and work commitments. Left him with no rug today, despite the storm, and he seemed ok. I just have this notion that tb's are thin skinned and need rugging in winter :-/
