Was Burghley fun? Come on, spill, what did you buy????
I'm sat on sofa with a roaring fire
Chilling nicely. Had a little cry on the way into Birmingham this morning, I think it was the shock of yesterday, but better now.
Have bought new rugs for LC, and new tendon boots for the Dizzy-wiz. The Tri Zone ones - one of the straps snapped off! Pah.
Someone is going to ride Dizz tomorrow! Her horse is stabled at the yard, but she's lame (tendon issue). She's a good rider (better than me), and seems quiet and sympathetic. I'll need someone to ride her mid-week if I have to work away. Will be very strange, no-one has ridden her since I got her, apart from during her trips to Newmarket....
Ok - I have caught up with everything now I think!!
So fill me in on whats going on then....
f_s - what happened with Pumpkins vetting?
tikino - yes he needs a bit of weight on - but I'm sure you will soon have that sorted!!
ldlp - after waiting from 8 - 4 yesterday for a vet for Carrot and Spud I won't moan about waiting for a vet again!!
DL - I wonder if he doesn't have EGS - try feeding him a couple of handfuls of alfalfa before you ride - its helps prevent the acid splashing in their stomach. He sounds just like the BGL when his ulcers would flare up.
Thanks for the tips SU - I had been planning on giving him just a haynet for him to have a munch on before I rode while I groomed/ tacked up etc for a bit so that he didn't come in hungry , will that do the same job or has alfalfa got a certain property to it ? Thanks
Should I be worried?! He had a bit of a "bout" of this last year which was when I got the vet out last and he ended up having a whole month off of work just from being lethargic and very stiff with lactic acid build ups
The vet wasn't majorly concerned though, just said to "leave him," until he perked up and to have massage therapy and some supplements to keep everthing fluid
Well, the vetting went ok until he was trotted up. You could see he was stiff on off side back leg. At that point, I did think, he's not going to pass this!! Anyway, had a good chat to our vet and she said that she couldn't be sure but thought that there might have been a change in that leg, near the fetlock, and it might well have something to do with the tendon sheath.
Ummm, not good really, as, pony could be fine for 3 years, 6 years whatever, but equally he could break down in 6 months!!! Can't take that risk, and therefore had to tell the owners that we wouldn't take him.
Very sad really, as he is a lovely pony and was exactly what we were looking for. Unfortunately, he was at the top end of the age scale, and as it is daughter's money, and she has saved so hard, we couldn't run the risk. The leg would also not be covered on insurance!
So, not a good day really, and we are back to searching again!!
archie leg is swelled up vet said due to lack of movement and to put stable bandages on, which i did, but he aint happy was stomping back legs and bed was a mess, so took them off leg looks no diff. should i put them back on?
Aw, f_s, is heart breaking now, but could have been so much worse
Hugs.
Slinks - I know the feeling, just bought LC two new rugs. We'll be beans one night and toast the next m'thinks
DL, sorry hun, failed miserably to follow, but hope things improve.
Have, supposedly, been offered a new contract with a different organization. Still in Birmingham, but higher day rate; also a chance to work from home... Have sort of accepted, but don't fancy telling current place - on the other hand, current place has recruited its permanent people, so I could well soon be surplus to requirements.
Ooh no I hadn't, he had been on it when I first got him but I percieved him to be a bit loopy on it, but having said that I had him on calmers and all sorts mostly from being scared of him, he never needed any of it! So I could've just been exaggerating things at the time!
Chance to work from home, means more time with Dizzy!!!!
It was disappointing yesterday, but, as you say, better in the long run. Also, I trust our vet, as she knows what we've been through, it was the first time I'd seen her since Rumour was PTS!!
Glasses of wine all round!!! I need it after yesterdays excitement!!
f_s & p_p - sorry to hear about Pumpkin but the right one will be along soon - no point in storing up problems for your self.
DL - alfalfa is better than hay as it contains a lot of calcium which helps neutralise and excess acid. It works a treat on the BGL - try a couple of big handfuls when you get him in so he can eat while you groom/tack up. If it is EGS it will help hugely!! The BGL does all things you mention but he no longer naps/refuses to go forward under saddle since treating his ulcers - 100% improvement!!
Oooh, haven't really had anything to do with Alfalfa in the scale of things! Sounds ideal for him as he gets a build up of lactic acid a couple of times each winter. I'll be investing
. Maybe still for sale as 14.3hh, so an inch over for the pony classes? I'm no expert, so could well be talking out of my hat, which would not be the first time lol.
Maybe f_s
MrsM I just want a 110% hack, basic schooling in all 3 paces (balanced, off the leg etc), bit of jumping but doesn't have to be loads as I'm not the most confident, bit of cross country, good to catch, clip, load, shoe etc and no bad vices but I don't mind handling wise say if its grumpy. Nothing over 12-13 really as I want a good few years out of it
(nothing wrong with older horses just would prefer it)
