I don't agree with 24/7 stabling.

All mine live out 24/7 except in the worst weather. They also live as a herd, except for the summer months when I have to watch grass intake etc, for laminitis.

To be honest, I know a lot of professionals and competition horses are stabled 24 hours, but, any I've seen are not really, really happy. Well cared for, and looked after, but sometimes they are viewed as being only for a purpose!

The horses we have are pretty chilled, have access to a stable if they want/necessary, but they all love being out. Also, they always have company of another equine.

Nixon came from a competition home where he was stabled pretty much 24/7 - except of course for schooling. So guess what? at the ripe old age of 11 he has ulcers and is completely sour in the school!! Now he is here he is out 24/7 for as long as possible - from Feb this year and they stay out as long as possible and go out everyday through the winter. Only stayed in one day this year when it was snowing really heavily - even then they got to mooch round the school for a bit to stretch their legs!! And not surprisingly his ulcers are on the mend he no longer windsucks or cribs and is calmer and will tolerate being schooled - also gets to hack out a lot which all helps (even if he is a big fat wuss!!)

So one beautiful Oldenburg with a great pedigree from a well known home who has been spoilt by keeping him for human convenience instead of letting him be a horse.......

Sorry rant over!!

Actually Slinky, I wasn't brave enough to put that into words, but I do agree with you.

The stresses these animals are under by being stabled for long periods, leads to many behavioural, vices, and medical problems.

Horses are so tolerant they suppress these problems until they just can't any longer!!! Weaving, cribbing, ulcers, nasty behaviour, box walking...all signs of stress, which, nine times out of ten would be alleviated through allowing the horse to live in a much more natural state.

It sad, but I think the horse is the most manipulated domesticated animal, and the one that least attention is paid to!!!

I can think of lots and lots.......
