I had to do CPR on those plastic horrid dummies in biology.. they were vile! And its always good to know how to open bottles, when you get like that old guy (though not a guy) in Father Ted, sitting in the chair shouting, I'll be able to open the booze for you!

Right - new pony - as you know leg in each corner, was at a riding school - tried twice, vetted and we were all very pleased, confindence giver, not too forward going but would shift off the leg and nice wee pop. (Stabled at night and in a very poor field with little grazing at night)

Brought home Thursday - ridden Friday, Sunday and tonight. Out day adn night in lovely field with pal. Brought in on Sunday on its own, very bulshy and reared when ridden once! Monday, came in with pal, happily hacked but napped when ilttle pal went for a canter on its own and reared when didn't get its own way. Both times when leg put on its gone straight back into its normal wee self. Same tack etc etc. Is this a hidden problem or do you think it is new pony, feeling happy with good grazing and on a bit of a power test?

I feel it is the later as it was bought from a BHS registered school who had it 3 years and it was adored - you should have seen the hoards of kids in tears when we picked it up - and I can't see the girl selling a dud with a reputation at stake. I'm just anxious cause I was the one that found it for them...
 
How much grass is it on? I suspect she maybe feeling a bit full of herself if she has been on next to nothing and is now out on relatively lush grazing.

As for the being naughty I suspect its a combination of grass, trying it on and being a RS pony she is used tyo following what others do - so to her if her buddy goes of to canter she should to - so maybe a little confidence issue.
 
I think it sounds like second scenario SV. If pony really meant it, from experiance with my beast putting your leg on wasn't enough

Also, the routine in a riding school can get them a bit "backward" almost sometimes (Well - around here anyway!) so pony might just be thrilled to get out of the routine of it and have some fun!

Also, with regards to when they came in on their own and were a bit bolshy - my friend brought a cob from a riding school and she took a couple of weeks to just re-adjust to being in a smaller, quieter environment and was initially quite anxious to leave her friends. Maybe a thought x
 
Sounds like a pony feeling a bit full of itself tbh to me. Unfortunately no matter how they tell you otherwise RS ponies do follow one another, and tend to be a bit nappy when taken away from others.

Dos the pony need to be out on grass 24/7, or can you bring it in, at least for part of the day. I do think, these type of ponies, who don't get a lot of grass, really start to feel their feet when the do.

Also, as long as she respects the rider saying no, and stops the behaviour, then she will begin to settle down. I think it's a case of being very strict initially to really stamp down who's in charge.

Phew, I am glad that it sounds like you all think she's just feeling good, that was my initial reaction. I have suggested that she comes in also but when its not my pony I can only do so much until it is down to the owner to either choose to take or not take the advice - which is frustrating.

Would you contact the school to see if this was a problem before - I feel that I'd be ragin gif it was as it was never mentioned?
 
You could ring up and ask nicely if they had ever had this happen before. Unfortunately, they aren't obliged to tell you about anything you haven't asked about when you viewed and tried the pony.

Can I ask if you asked them about vices and habits when you went to view and try? I also just had a thought, is the pony shod?? and if it isn't are they riding her on a rough or pebbled surface???

It's just, that with the grass going through her system, after not getting too much, I wondered if her feet were perhaps a little tender ( not laminitic btw) just a little foot sore?? We had a pony like this once, a bit like this one, and he did that!!

SV I think I'd leave it to see if pony changes with the possible change of routine / settling in / realising she isn't boss before maybe ringing the riding school.

If the problem still persists - at least you will have more of an argument against them if needs be!
 
Don't worry Darcy, you just need a hand held typing spork! You'll beat us all at typing speed then!

Sea_View, from what you've said it sounds like the pony may just be starting to see the good side of not following ponies around all day, and noticing a change but yet wanting the reassurance of what it has known. So long as the rider/owner feels they can overcome the problem through their riding and keep on trying, the pony should settle into a different routine.. Just takes patience and nice persistance I think.

I asked all those questions - vices, problems, teeth, back, vaccinations, shoeing etc etc only prob I was told about was she makes faces - which we have yet really to see. I do take the point with the feet tho - she's only got fronts on so i think I will defo volunteer the muzzle/strip grazing/keep in again!

S_V - I would wait a little longer as I think it is a combination of grass and a change of routine. As long as they stay firm with her both on the ground and riding i think she will settle down. RS do take the spark out of them - don't necessarily put it out just dampen it down, and now hers is reigniting!!

Also she is probably used to being ridden for several hours a day - especially through the summer with kidlets being on hoilday and now she is doing an hour or so - no wonder she is feeling good!!
