I think it's probably a bite again then. Especially if she's escaped into longer grass. The clegs are horrible at the minute, and bites do come up a bit hard, but usually go down again.
Good thanks - seem to have got my big grey lump through his napping - actually went out on our own today and had no napping at all - didn't use my stick once and didn't have spurs on either!! Well chuffed....
Right obviously Paddy had done nothing other than a bit of hunting when I got him and after the big hospital fall
when I first got him it became my mission to get over my new fear of jumping (was BE eventer and BSJA jumper with Risky) as you all kow that has been successful, I'm back to normal and he's coming on like a star so ... new mission. He really does try hard on he flat when I'm schooling but the MINUTE another horse arrives he's so interested in what they are doing I get big giraffe neck and poop work. David Gatherer at my last XC llesson said I should BE him this year but I feel that cause our flatwork isn't good adn the way he is with others when we're schooling I'd try sort that out first before paying the fortune thats required for BE. Anyhoo, my point is - will just practise with Paddy and other horses get him used to schooling and not being interested with others or is his 'hunting' instinct likely to not make that happen? Ok I know I'm rambling but when I have tried to do a little work when warming up at XC's he is not interested at all and I'm worries that might be the way of him.
Or have I got too much time on my hands during these holidays and making worries out of nothng? Was thinking I'd do the local Riding CLub schooling nights and 2 dressage leagues over winter?
I think the more he is schooled etc on his own with horses coming and going, the more he'll get used to it. Darcy used to be hunted etc and I had a similar problem at first. However, he's incredibily nappy so any excuse with him! The RC schooling nights and dressage leagues will be great because he'll be required to school / warm up etc with other horses quite often , so the novelty should hopefully wear off.
With Darcy , I used to take him into the school at "peak riding time," which is when EVERYONE would go past. I'd also encourage people to ride in the school with me as often as possible because I could then teach him to stop being nappy in there, and get over the fact that another horse is in there and concentrate.
So when he is warming up for X country he isn't interested in other horses? its just when doing flatwork/schooling?
If thats the case I would say you are right - spend this winter concentrating on the stressage and get him out to as many local classes as you can so he gets bored of it. Also if you can get him working properly on the bit/in an outline he will be less able to turn giraffe!! I think its 'cos he is still a baby as far as dressage is concerned. You need to work on him listening to you.
What I meant was when I tried to school him a bit when warming up for XC's he wasn't interested in listening to me - prob just kneew it was XC time not schooling time!
He works nicely on the bit until others come in/go by then its big giraffe neck and faffing about. Think I will just do loads over winter, just worrying that it won't come good - gads I've just realised how that sounds I mean give the poor boy a break S_V!!!
I think that whatever discipline they are used to does have an effect on their concentration, and this is a concentration issue.
Your idea of going to the riding club schooling nights and doing the dressage leagues is a great idea. The more he does the less he'll be interested. It's a bit like de-sensitising.
I would aim to take him for the experience, for the first few times, try not to pressurise yourself too much, and don't make it very exciting. Then, start gradually to ask for more.
It's a bit like taking a horse to a show first time round, but I think you have the right idea. Just because he's very good at the xc and jumping, he probably finds the dressage phase a bit boring!!
No you are right - its just getting him used to it - the more he does the less interested he will become in others. DL idea of others coming and going while you are schooling is a good idea - is that possible??
Darcy used to put his head up like a giraffe ..and then squeal...like a pig.
He also squeals when the vet does his jabs lol, as it so say "Ow! What are you doing to me?!" And if I catch him off guard brushing his stomach ...wimp!
I use my instructors school so its only really if her daughter is riding will people be about but I can get my friend to come with me on Ali or will that not count cause its Paddy's buddy? RC schooling nights are fairly often tho so hopefully that'll help
