When we want them to concentrate, we hack them to the local riding school, and join in with the lesson.
Obviously, not the lead rein!!!!
but there are all sorts of things going on down there and it does help them to get used to everything, even if it's only standing in line until the lesoon starts!!!
I've been asked if I'll ride this little welsh cob to try to "iron out," her napping
She asked me to hack her last year to get her out and about as she wasn't too keen on it, but I was the last person to hack her - last year
So anywho, my friend tried to hack her the other week and it resulted in spinning and bolt-trotting down an alleyway. They HAD taken her down a busy road with 3 lorries, a bus and a train though.
She's asked if I'd just ride for ten minutes around the block because "Darcy used to do it." But - I dont know . For a little 14hh-er that seems unhappy with my long legs hanging around her - she's pretty damn fast!!
D_L only do what you are comfortable with doing. If you are slighlty anxious the pony will realise. Not being cheeky to but ur friend that rode her, is she as confident/experienced as you? Would you be likely to get more out of the pony?
Umm well, she's a bit of a timid hacker. She never liked hacking just because she'd rather school/ jump so left it and now its become an issue and it's putting her off. I think she lets her adrenaline get a bit high and then it all goes a bit to pot. I usually am pretty calm , but the only way to get her "out," is across said road . And I don't really fancy spinning in the road infront of cars etc. I'd probably lead her to the bridle path thats 2 minutes away .. I think !
The problem with little ponies, is they turn on a sixpence!!!
I would, like S_V says only do what you're comfortable doing. Also, perhaps small steps rather than trying to acheive everything at once. The pony sounds like it's lacking in confidence, possibly not getting that from the rider.
Don't put yourself in a dangerous position. Perhaps someone could walk out with you to start with.
Its strange because she's a really brave pony inside the confides of her field and she was really brave hacking . Used to really march out etc but hm, I'll have to find those vecro jods!
I would take it slowly and do a bit of ground work and stuff in the school first so she gets used to you again - and it will take the edge off her before you go out.
Then velcro bummed jods, bp, hat, parachute, seat belt......
Oh no she knows who I am unfortunatly! She used to teach this lady at the yard and I'd sit and watch her lessons and knows my name etc. Damn! And it starts on the 26th. My suitcase of padding etc will be coming with me!
