toby is so so we still have quite a raise respiratory rate it was 18 this morning and 20 tonght. he also won't eat his just grass and soya oil. he has at 3 fully haynet today as he is not allowed to be without hay. i realy don't know what to think going to speak to vet 2mrw. any sujestions

he was diagnoised with metabolic acidosis vet reckons he would have been dead within a few day he is avery luck lad. he has been gastroscoped, lungs scoped full blood work he is anemic as well. he needs to eat to get his medication

he has never to be without hay/haylage and has to get a feed 2 handfuls of lightly mollased or non mollased chaff and soya oil 3 x day with his probiotics and meds. he is to get a no carbohydrate diet

Sorry just having a conversation with P_P, she's just come in!!

tikino - is it getting the meds into him that's the problem?
smile.gif

he has never been a fussy eater so don't know if it is the soya oil or if he is just feeling crap. i am also worried about him still having a raised resp rate as it is still very high between 18-22

Some don't like oil, we have one that doesn't!!

Have you tried putting a bit of mint into the feed, or marmite??

I know that you're a bit stumped as he can't have anything with too much sugar, otherwise I would have suggested molasses
smile.gif

i a terrified to give him anything othr than what it said in his discharge notes after realising how close to death he was. i haven't even gave him his supplements in case they do anything to him. i thin the paranoia is setting in

Oh don't feel like that tikino, it's awful when they tell you to do this or that, and as he's been so ill, it's understandable you will be be worried about giving him anything.

The way I look at it is this, he needs his medication, and without it he won't get better, so just try anything, in small quantities to get the medicine in him.
smile.gif

Ok - so what chaff have you got?
confused.gif

He bascially needs the same diet as a lami - look at Happy Hoof as apart from being low calorie, low molasses, no cereals etc it has mint in it so it smells nice and tastes nice - all of mine seem to love it when they are poorly. I can send you some to try it you want.
smile.gif

I give all of my poorly animals - dogs, cats, horses and humans!!

- aloe vera juice. Is packed full of vits and mins and all sorts of other goodies and it won't affect any of the meds from the vets. It works in mysterious ways for all sorts of things. It helps soothe and heal - never without it.
smile.gif

I would imagine that his respiratory rate will go down as his medication gets through his system.

Good idea Slinky, happy hoof they all seem to like and it doesn't have the carb value in it.
grin.gif

Did the vet say his respiratory rate was due to his condition? Is his temperature up too??

Slinky will fill you in on the aloe vera, it's good stuff. I think you can get it online, but also at health food shops, they do it in liquid form

Pony vetting is tomorrow morning at 10.30, so just deciding (if it goes well!!!

) when we can pick him up!!
