My friend I am sorry I dont have any friends on here (well one but she is on holiday).. I am sure if you had an elderly horse in your care you would not watch it loose weight either however some would all for the want of a rug to keep the rain off.... This is all referring to a post the other day
M_G, you can have as few or as many friends on here as you wish. However, I thought this post had been done to death!!
As the post is a totally separate issue from Sweet FA, I am just a little concerned at your tone
Speaking only for myself here, I would not wish to see any equine suffering from lack of proper care and attention, and although I have seen many instances of this over the years, I would not, and never have condoned this behaviour.
As such, I find it unbelievable that you are lecturing me on equine standards of care!!
I don't know you, you don't know me, or anything about me. I would not be so presumptuous to instruct you therefore, kindly leave me out of your petty arguments.
However, should you decide to join in on the sweet Fa, you are welcome
You and me both my horses only have the best I can afford (sadly Fal is out of my budget) but rambo does feature highly all bought from my local tack shop as I believe in supporting the rural economy where I can.
If there was a horse on my yard that was not mine and needed a rug I would buy a cheap one and donate it to the owner (I cant see any animal suffer)

Sorry I never realised it was ok for you to have a dig at me but I am not allowed to respond (how foolish of me) and as I am being discussed as the person who said you could get a rug for £20 I think I am entitled to respond.... Dont you?
Again apologies if this is purely a one sided snipe thread
No I responded and can only hope the OP has bought a rug for the pony or the owner has taken responsibility (I doubt they have) & I am not interested in all the bitching that I am assuming went on after
sorry couldnt even remember who said about you could get a rug for £ 20 on other thread just mentioned ive never seen one for sale at £20 or less
but then as we've established i clearly shop at the wrong places
im sorry if ive caused an argument, didnt mean to
but you yourself did say if you couldnt afford £20 for a rug then shouldnt have a horse so surely buying a rug for an owner who either doesnt have the funds or cant be bothered too is contradicting yourself
imo people need to learn to take responsibilty for the animals that they have
Well, I'm finishing work early tonight so I can get a little ride in.
I have never really had to school a horse before so after my lesson last week where I was shown how to get her to round her back and lower her head a bit, I am very motivated to try it regularly, though I don't like to do too much as she's old and stiff, but the last few times I've schooled I've really felt like she was listening to me and working hard. I only do twenty mins, plenty of circles and serpentines, I feel like I have a goal with her now instead of just aimlessley going around the school!
But, can anyone tell me, as I'm trying to take me weight off her back, my instructor told me to keep her on a circle (20m until she's warmed up), keep a contact on inside rein and squeeze and release outside rein to encourage her to lower her head. Doesn't it take a bit more than that? Or is this the start of getting her to lower her head and rounding the back, engaging etc will follow?
JS - I agree with some circles, but would start large and work down to 20m, mainly because, if she is stiff, it will warm her up gradually, and encourage her to be more supple.
I wouldn't worry too much about getting collection straight away, just concentrate on getting her supple enough, so that, when you do ask, it will be easy for her
tbh JS i think its completely the other way round an ive certainly always been taught that it is, of course you need the encouragement from the rein but the horse must be engaged behind and moving forwards first.....the push from behind creates the energy for the outline/movement through and over the back, you cant make an outline out of nothing if that makes sense because you have nothing to put into one...i hope that makes sense lol

Certainly Pixxie is right, you do need the "drive" from behind to engage and collect. I think, however, your instructor my be working on her being more supple and bending more, and that is why she has asked you to do more circles. That's why I suggested larger circles, then coming down to the 20m ones.
Circles will help supple her up to bend, but, as for bringing her head down ("on the bit") I would suggest more leg, before "tweeking" the reins.
It does take a little while, so be patient, and enjoy!!
I was driving home and thought I might get a sneaky ride but the wind when I got home was unbelieveable!!
Even my small slender self might have got blown off the top!!
The good news is I didn't fall over in the mud again
- was close though so I dropped my work phone in the mud instead!!
But
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MAJOR CRISIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I went shopping and the freezers had boken down so there was no Ben & Jerry!!!!!
I have bought melt in the middle chocolate puds for tonight to console myself until I can get to another supermarket tomorrow to replace the ice cream *sobs*
