My chap suffers with mildish sweet itch and since moving yards he has got slightly worse itchy wise.

I have a box which I am going to put up a mossie net so they can't get in his box but i'm wondering do I keep him in at night or during the day as i'm getting conflicting advice!

Midges are quite bad where I am but no option to move at present.

Thank you, any advice appreciated

Worst times are dawn and dusk really - but generally night time turnout is recommended - the earlier you can bring in / later you can chuck out the better

Sometimes I get up for work at 3am, and it is getting light in summer - so that is what time dawn is, dusk can be around 11pm, so we find they are better in at night - brought in well before dusk when its earlier, and dawn isn't usually an issue. We still use sweet itch hoodies in the day, and put anti midge cream on in the stable, even leave the rugs on on midgy nights. (We live in a Pennine bog that is perfect for midges). I use Aloe vera to calm it when they come in too.

I put my SI pony out in a rambo hoodyabout 8 and bring in at 4, which works well.

The rambo hoody can be rather hot in hot weather, so I am considering Premier Equine's new fly rug which is ultra light and tested in very hot countries with good results.

In a night and leave the sweet itch rug on mine never comes off apart from groom/wash and riding. I've even ridden in mine on particularly bad days.

Mine comes in at night and out by day; but I live on site and so can keep an eye.

He wears a Rambo hoody (can't be bettered IME).

Also has Brewers Yeast & Linseed, plus Cider Vinegar. In the summer he'll also have a handful of Cleavers (sticky stuff) in his haynet.

This works for us; and has done for some years now. If the midges are really bad in the daytime I'll change the routine around so he's standing in during the daytime.

Thank you for all your help! I've got a snuggy hoods sweet itch set and Masta bug rug for when turned out and a thick cotton combo for when in the box. Think I'll keep him in at night and out during day. Plus the stop itch salve and fly spray. :0)

Get some benzoyl benzoate off the web. My mare suffers quite badly, she stays out as she rubs like mad if left in, but this stuff works a treat! Also keep rug on 24/7 a regular bath with tea tree shampoo (human stuff) should help any scabby bits.
