So i was holding my breathe and it looks like it was all pointless :(:(

On thursday he almost took a wall down itching bless him..

So i put him out in the field yesterday and dragged out his sweetitch rug and do you know it was too TIGHT :eek::eek:
when he las was in it it was big :rolleyes:

so 7ft2 here we come.


How are you all bearing up??
 
No current SI horse for me at the moment, but I read the SI posts with interest.

Have you tried homeopathy? From what I've read some people have had very good results with using this for their sweet itchy horses. I have witnessed it work first hand (for other conditions) on me and a few different animals I've been in contact with now.
 
Try cutting down, or out altogether, grass. I had to remove a horse with a severe sweet itch problem (had to wear rugs indoors and out) from grass for other reasons, and blow me down, his sweet itch disappeared COMPLETELY once he no longer had access to sugary green stuff.
 
It's the bath oil (os some people use some spray oil) in the greeny/blue bottle - used to be called woodland fresh but don't think it is anymore. I mix equal parts S so S oil, water and white vinegar and spray or wipe on. I'm also trying sweetrelief powder (vitamin B based) so might be similar to Cavalesse but much cheaper. She's been on it about 3 weeks and so far I haven't put the sweet-itch rug on as no obvious rubbing.
 
Mine have been wearing their rugs for a few weeks already, as soon as the rain stopped over here ... so far, so good. I find getting the rugs on as early as possible makes such a difference. It's not that the flies *can't* get at them, it's that there are plenty of delicious unrugged horses to choose from

ok just ordered some sweet relief powder lets hope it works how do you feed it??

To have no grass how and where did the horse live?

I found keeping mine in during the day and only turning out after dark worked and he didn't itch

Right now I am trialling more midge repellent products, got one with a new chemical ingredient which is much better than DEET, but less toxic (doesn't melt plastic)
 
pure baby oil rubbed in to neck and dock of tail everyday at first then every 2 days - works brill and mmmmmmmmmm mane and tail so soft - used it for 3 yrs now and only had minor sweet itch at back end of summer last yr and this is a mare that rubs ever self raw :) and asda's is so cheap - 5 bottles stocked up lol

baby oil is that not dangerous?? i have a black beast but i would worry he would sizzle :eek::p
 
lol Ibot i know how baby oil can fry skin but i rub into the roots so hair is over it and she has a full fly sheet ( that does not stop her getting sweet itch) so that keeps sun off her but have to just get to the roots . used it for 3 years now and my little mare as not fryed at all trust me - ohhh btw she has total children sun block on her white/pinky muzzle which catches the sun and its bright pink bless her she so looks a poppet :)

Just have a google of "sweet itch homeopathy" and have a browse. I'm in no better position to advise you than that, really :)

I also use the Avon skin so soft withwhite vinegar and water, works for mine. They say a marmite sandwich's good too!
 
Re Ibot's question about feeding sweetrelief powder - I only feed a small cup of balancer and a few carrots but at first I also put in a little bit of apple juice just to disguise the fact there was something new in the feed. I find the juice is something they like and it also helps the powder stick to the food and not be left at the bottom of the bowl, which is licked clean. Hope the sweet-relief works for you.
 
i think i am willing to try everything at this stage would love not to worry about my boy. And to enjoy the summer and not dread it lol.

i like the idea of baby oil it makes sense too as when skin dries out thats when it gets itchy :)

i will get him a new rug and start a fresh, i also use neem oil which is really good it helped a lot last year, infact i am known as a bit of a witch at my yard as i tend to have a cream and potion to cure most things :D:D
well i hope thats why i am known as a witch lol :D:D
