Sweet Itch-Mane dissappeared overnight!

Hey All,

Said horse managed to rip her sweet itch hood last night and must have spent most of the night rubbing her mane off! Bottom section is all gone, nearly bleeding in some places..boo!

So what should i put on it to help prevent her itching further and for it to heal, any miracle cures people? She has not done this with the rug on so far, just worried now she has started itching she may not want to stop-best ad rug getting repaired today and have a replacement which is on in the mean time! :-)
 
Ah so frustrating,
After seeing it mentioned here I now swear by the nettex summer freedom salve. It's stopped him rubbing his tail instantly and his mane. And it lasted a good week before I had to put more on.

I think there are some over products available like itch stop or I think it's called z itch. If I see them out and about I,m going to try them
 
Hi there, i bought a stunning pony last year very cheap because they couldnt control his sweetitch, he had it very severe, no mane, lack of tail and even rubbed till he bled on his face, tops of legs, belly, sheaf etc. I found out about benzyl benzoate and have never looked back, once it started working i didnt even have to use his sweetitch rug!!! you can get it from some chemists allthough is hard to find 1 that stock it! for approx £6 which would last mine just over a week, but have now found that it can be purchased from www.hyperdrug.co.uk (fast delivery too!) in equine section. its about £13 and seems to last ages! still got loads left from purchase last month! just apply liberaly to affected areas every day (pour in hand rub on) until working then about 2-3 times a week after. well worth the money and cheaper than 1s in shops specified for sweetitch that rarely work! and my tip is if you get the 1 from hyperdrug top it up slightly with mouthwash (yes..i did just say mouthwash!any brand, is actualy good for skin conditions inc rain scould etc!) then shake it up and it is then thin enough solution to spray on with old spray top off fly spray or something like that!then you dont waste as much and it goes futher! i hope this helps your poor horse, i havnt heard of anyone that has tried this that it hasnt worked for!
 
Hi Op. What a bummer that she’s started itching now. I have all but ditched the fly rug now (my mare was in a similar state to the case described above) and use Benzyl Benzoate 400ml:Neem Oil 100ml, applied every two days. Has worked for the past two years. I have it in a 500ml water bottle and shake before use, then pour onto a soft grooming brush.

That won’t help you at the moment, though, as she’s got raw wounds. Big no-no for both of the above! When I got Chloe in her wounded state, I used Sudocrem – in large supermarkets you can buy it in large tubs. Other option is Germolene, which has anaesthetic in it, so will numb the irritated skin.
 
hey all, thanks for the advice, so i will go for sudocream or similar until any open sores are heled, then i think ill try the benzyl kcoop thanks for the link! its such a bummer isn't it, she been so good until now, has anyone tried herbal tablets for this btw, my local tack shop has some in i wondered if anyone had any luck with these?
